I seem to recall that TPTB butchered Kirby's original story for Hunger Dogs, totally rearranging the artwork, and that he wasn't too happy with the result. Normally I'm not in favor of tampering with a printed story, but restoring the Hunger Dogs graphic novel to it's original vision would be something I wouldn't mind seeing.

I guess I just saw this as more of a "Deadman" collection than a Neal Adams showcase. I can't believe anyone would think a story by the creators of Deadman looks more out of place than an over-done coloring job which would have looked dated in 1996. The re-drawing of the entire issue would probably not have bothered me at all if the coloring had been kept consistant with the rest of the book. Hell, if the rest of the book had had color splattered all over it by the Continuity Comics "professionals" than I wouldn't have complained as much because it would have been consistant.

I just came across this topic (and read the whole bloody thing at once! Time for some eye massage!) and have some questions for Bob:

1) Did anything come of the idea of having $19.95 first volumes for long-running series again? This would probably even be a good deal at $25 or so.

2) I guess that this happened in the past because of larger print runs or multiple printings of those volumes. Is there any chance that when others go into later printings that the price could be lowered?

3) Will the Will Eisner Library ever include the Eisner/Iger shop material?

Thanks,
Raymond Neal

Rip Hunter and the Sea Devils...

...whenever, whereever, I'm there (yeah, I know, not likely for some time...but, we can always hope right? Maybe squeeze poor Dolphin's one AND only appearance in Showcase 79? Okay, I know we'll likely NEVER see that...or B'wana Beast...)

JLA/Avengers in 2004? IF that means montly (AND that DC will have multiple WW/George Perez and a JLA/George TPB by then, as well as a small arsenal of his Titans work...okay!)

May I also suggest a reprint/redo of the Perez JLA postcards from the 1980s?

I was going to point that out, but I thought people might think I spend way too much time online... Plus the forum is horrendously slow this evening, so I gave up the first time.

Well, now I'm heading back to the Joe Quesada Forum to rile the fanboys for a while...

I think that's a great idea, but only at a point when lots of Showcase features have been used in their own books, and the remnants of the title are deemed by DC to not merit their own Archive. For instance, I fully expect we should see a Sea Devils and Rip Hunter Archive, and perhaps a Cave Carson volume, within the next 10-15 years. Why not?

But a Showcase Archives could come in and sweep up after the place, gathering together the issues that weren't covered. I'd love to see the first few issues, like the one featuring the Navy Frogmen. I've always had this fascination with the frogman...(maybe something i should see a shrink about)...and it would be cool to see a "dawning of the Silver Age" rendering of what DC thought an adventure with frogmen would be like.

Hey again, Bob!

I know there are quite a few trades that could use this, but I was wondering if there was any chance we'd see something like the Ellis Stormwatch trades go back to print with the glossier paper? Same problem that occured in the early Authority trades, Laura Depuy's colors look incredibly muddled. I know these are Wildstorm TPBs, so if you don't know, where might I go for that? Thanks!

Bob:
Will the Kirby Jimmy Olsen volumes be hardcovers or trade paperbacks?

Will good sales on Jimmy Olsen make color reprint volumes of Forever People, New Gods and Mister Miracle likely?
Or of the post-Fourth World 1970s Kirby DC material?

I imagine this must have been at least lightly discussed--without making any commitments, what seems to be the general feeling?
Thanks.

Hi Mr. Greenberger!

I have just one question for you.

Is there any release date yet for the next TPB coming out for Grant Morrison's run on Animal Man (Issues 18-26, which has the Crisis II: The Secret Crisis storyline (Animal Man #22-26)?

Thank you in advance for answering this question.

Mr. Greenberger,

A question, and I apologize if it has been asked previously.

I would love to see a Fawcett Comics Annual in the faux-80 Pg. Giant style. Now I know that if one were to be published, it wolud skew heavily toward previously DC reprinted material; I might not like it, but I know that. My question is how does Bill Black and his reprinting of the non-Marvel Family heroes fit into the scheme of things. Is he renting them from DC? Does DC even have the rights to the old stories any more? Not to be selfish, but I'd like to see a Minute Man or Bullet Man story in color under the DC bullet once in a while at what would be a more reasonable price than what Black is publishing for black-&-white reprints.

Thanks,
Greg

With the passing of the letters page from DC comics, how about a book of letters to the editor through the years? Just like we have reprints to show us how our favorite heroes originated and developed, we could read the reader reactions to these milestones. How did the letters page react to the "New Look" Batman, the destruction of Kryptonite on Earth, or the first meeting between the Silver and Golden Age Flashes? I think it would be fun just to read the ordinary letters, too: who should or shouldn't be in the JLA, or the Legion of Super Heroes, or the Teen Titans; why the current writer/penciller is great or should be dumped; and the continuous cries of "worst issue ever." Would anyone else buy such a book?

I used to love reading the letters pages but never wrote in myself. A lot of the appeal was probably the topical nature of them but maybe if I had one in front of me I would change my mind. My gut says it wouldn't make much of a read but it's been wrong before.

I read this thread a few weeks ago and haven't been back for a while. It was quite a bit shorter the last time I was here. Plus I cheated and jumped to the end, so I'm probably about to ask something that has already been addressed. I was a big fan of Black Lightning and Booster Gold. (My opinions are not exactly sought out by marketing experts) I no longer have my copies of either and wonder if they would be readily available in some form. I guess I shouldn't have too much trouble finding the Boost but Black Lightning figures to be a different story if I just try to find the back issues in comic stores. Thank you very much for going to this kind of trouble and listening to fans.

When I first got here, I was doing research and one day Dale walks in and says, "We're a little swamped. Can you jump on the Return of Hawkman collection?" Finally, a book to work with. In looking over what we had done and after speaking with our sales and marketing folk, it occured to me that we have a growing bookstore readership that may not know the comics and therefore not know the characters. Instead of an intro, I figured we needed a recap or Cast of Characters page. Shortly thereafter, Tony Isabella made a similar observation in one of his thousand review locations. That sealed it. So, in all of the books I edit, there should be something putting the characters and their status quo in context for new or casual readers. I've had a lot of support from the series' writers and editors about this so I guess it's the right way to go.

Neal has tweaked some art and recolored five of the eight stories in volume one. The tweaks usually reposition balloons that were improperly placed to begin with. Some faces or musculature has also been adjusted. Neal sees this as a chance to correct mistakes from his youth and since we're showcasing his work, it's appropriate for him to be happy with the results.

No decision as yet on the Volume Ones and lower pricing. As for gang printing back to press Archives and bringing the price down, that's not quite possible. The Archives sell at different rates andgo back to press throughout the year to remain available as backlist items.

No plans for Eisner/Iger material to be part of the Library.

I alreayd suggested to Dale that the JLA Postcards be used a spot art throughout the book, whenever we get to it.

Superman's modern material? Well, Critical Condition comes out next month (just got my first copy and it looks cool). We'll have President Lex later in the year and eventually catch up to today's stories.

Yes, the Flash Vol. 4 is a typo. No such book is approved or scheduled as yet.

Animal Man: Deus ex Machina is currently scheduled for the fall.

I have no idea about Bill Black's access to the PD Fawcett material and how that impacts our ability to produce the other heroes.

Booster Gold and Black Lightning? Well, if your local shops do not stock back issues, try one of the on-line dealers or go to a comic con. Neither is scheduled for a collection.

Have a good weekend, everyone.
