But it doesn't deserve to be in the LEGION ARCHIVES.

What is the point? Two panels of Projectra?

Another question for Bob.

Recent discussions in a group that Im a part of brought Peter Milligan's name and works to the front. After the third (and last) Morrison's Animal Man TPB, could we see a Peter Milligan Animal Man TPB too? After all, he only did 6 issues and he is regaining some popularity with X-Statix...

1) Please skip the All-Flash and Comic Cavalcade material. Comic Cavalcade is already compromised because Wonder Woman and Golden Age Green Lantern are not included. There are no "essential to modern continity" stories in All-Flash til about #12, editions away. Push come to shove, I would prefer you re-create that one anyone as it is a full-issue story (It's the origin of the Thinker) as a replica edition.

2) If you follow #1, and pad the book a little, you can cover Flash Comics #18-36. #35 is the first appearance of the Shade (or maybe #33, amazing that I used to remember all this) and #36 is definetly the first appearance of the Rag Doll. The Rag Doll story, in addition to be "relevant" is also a very good story. Admittedly, this will push you to ~230 of content not included covers and editorial material. Hence #3.

3) Raise the price to $60. I appreciate that you are experimenting with smaller volumes for a lower price but please try the upper end. I am willing to pay a premium to get this material out there. If they are 20% away from being in the range, boost the price by 20% and drive it home. I imagine I am not alone in this, esp if you throw in just a little extra material.

Agreed with all except #3, sorta. I agree that Flash and All-Flash should be done separately (but I certainly won't complain if they're together). My reasoning is Flash will get over the wartime slump to the "good" material faster and show All-Flash readers the light at the end of the tunnel. Basically, I think it would help sales in the long run.

As for #3, I think a higher price for harder sells like Red Tornado is fine, but Flash should move once the series picks up more. While Red Tornado has a smaller fan base, and people can see the higher price is due to demand, Flash is better known, and a higher price could be a sign that the material just isn't selling because it isn’t any good. It would only hurt it more in my opinion.

Bob,
thanks for answering all of our questions, but i noticed that you did not comment about Dc's commitment to the current archive "look" those of us who have all of the archives are worried that the look of the series might change and that the remianing books would not be uniform. If you can, please comment.

i liked this series too, but my question really was whether DC intended to make an archive that revolves around villains as opposed to heros. Just used the Joker as an example.

I agree with DStepp on the format, and am torn on his vs. Steve's opinion on pricing. I can say without doubt I'd easily pay $60 for Flash, and if that's what it takes to get it done, please do it!!

I understand Steve's concerns, but I think fans of the series would rather have it out there at a slightly higher price rather than have it lanquishing in some dark corner of the Committee War Room.

Gary "thanks Dave and Steve for keeping this subject alive - volume #2 needs to be high priority at this point. And thank you Bob for answering my concerns" O.

Now which survey could he possibly be referring to here?

I remember where there was lots of controversy about the utility of the survey. In fact, I recall a couple people urging others not to take it. Well, I think we can put all that silliness to rest.

I am glad to see Bob has voiced his observance of the survey results.

I have a question regarding HUSH Hardcovers program.
When Hush come out I thought that buying a HUSH HC with the complete story would be great (as it was with Long Halloween and Dark Victory), but now it seems that DC will go for 2 smaller HC. Isn't there a possibility to make just one HC with the 12-issues regarding this storyline?

Bob, I really hope that if the D.Stepp Archive survey is taken in consideration, PLEASE consider the Scribbly/Red Tomat...errr..Tornado Archives!!!!

I think that there would be PLENTY of interest in and out of the "general" comic/archive consuming public.

And I, like many here, WOULD pay extra to ensure its publication.

Given the current thinking at DC, I'll bet they'd like to see some sustained interest on our part before they commit to something they view as being risky. If Scribbly shows up in the top 5 of DStepp's survey for 3 or 4 years in a row, I think we'll be successful. Right now, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Scribbly fans, you need to convince your fellow survey takers that Scribbly is deserving of one of their votes.

But as a general matter, touching here on KK/Legion specifically, I'd always rather see the Archives err on the side of inclusion rather than exclusion. If something is excluded, those who want to see it are left out, perhaps forever. If something is included, people who dislike it (like Michael with KK, apparently) can always decide not to purchase it, but at least they have a choice. For what it's worth, my guess is that few people who would otherwise buy a Legion Archive #13, say, would not buy it if KK is included. So inclusion seems best to me.

I particularly dislike the notion that Archives should be planned around what someone deems good, bad, or mediocre material. That's all in the eye of the beholder and the beauty of the Archive program is that it strives to include everything and let us all make up our own minds. Some of that judging process is unavoidable, of course (such as in the decision-making process in regard to which titles to start Archiving), but once an Archive series is up and running it should reprint everything as it comes along and not be subject to exclusion at someone's whim. One man's trash is another's treasure, and tastes change with time. The Archive program is theoretically intended, at least in part, to preserve this material forever as an historical record. KK illustrates this -- even if it ain't the best comics ever, it illustrates its era, both in real life and comics, and, most importantly, has significant ties to the core title being Archived. That's why I'd include KK, and that's the type of thinking I'd apply to any related question in the future.

And, this is why I WON'T buy any more Legion Archives if they DON'T include more Karate Kid...(arguements why on the other thread. THE LEGION was there about every other issue, as well as Val in ALL...)

As for the Joker issues...I loved them (but I DO know that was due more to my childhood than anything else...still would love to see them collected. If we could get that Bizarro collection...)

Speaking of Bizarro, how about some collection with the stories from the Elseworlds DC 80-Page Giant (EXCEPT that lousy Bizarro story which got it banned?)

Let me start this out by stating that this is not meant as a personal attack about what you have said or your right to say it. However, I do not support any increase in price at this time for the archive series. Fifty dollars, in my opinion, is more than expensive enough. I realize that it is true that the archives have stayed the same price for over a decade, and I appreciate that fact, but ten years ago, the archives were outrageously priced. I do nout support any increase in price because to do so would create a precedent, and if DC thinks for a minute that they can get sixty bucks for an archive then sixty bucks will become the norm. I have stated on many occasions that the amount of pages per archive has been diminishing. This has been true for some time(i know there are xceptions). The average archive clocks in at around 208 pages now. I have every single archive that DC has produced, inclusing Mad, Tor and Spirit. I have gone with the flow and even purchased archives that I thought would not interest me or that I felt were undeserving of archival treatment like Enemy Ace and Teen Titans. And i have recived a lot in return. I appreciate DC's continued commitment to the archive program, but sixty bucks is outrageous, and many people, myslef included will simply begin cutting archives from our must have lists in favor of other HC reprints. Again, I do not mean this as an attck on anyone. I know how desperate we all are to get as much archived as possible. I know that sometimes we feel that we jsut can't wait to have a particular character archived, but we need to draw the line somewhere.

Karate Kid 4...multiple Legion members (couple of pages, in 30th Century)

Karate Kid 6...multiple Legion members involved and rescued by Val.

Karate Kid 8, 9 (okay, 8 only has a couple of panels of Jeckie, but the story leads into 9, which has MAJOR Val/Jeckie stuff...)

And 8 & 9 lead to...

Karate Kid 10 (multiple Legion members, IN the 30th Century on Orando...and leads into S&LSH 231...)

11...no Legion, but the out of time return of Major Disaster (and leads into...)

12 & 13...Val vs. Adventure era Legion (INCLUDING Superboy) thanks to the Lord of Time...

I think they are likely only giving us 1 and 10 (but, what about the pour fan, 20 years from now, who will NEVER see the stories between? THEY will feel cheated...)

I don't know your opinion on the collection in general, but I'd go to the stake for a Bizarro Comics II. I'm not sure whether that's under Bob's umbrella, but the first book was the freshest most vibrant original publication DC has put out in the past couple years. More!

Is this now the longest running thread ever ?

Some quickies....

Thought that Rima was only 6 issues long ?
(By the way, i have these for sale, to whoever was missing an issue). So don't understand the 2 volume comment i read earlier.

In 2023, i think that the least of our worries will be if the main Karate Kid issues are never reprinted. They'll probably be still found in the bargain bins.
Fine , print the cross-over stories, but leave the rest please.
I agree with an earlier comment, would this set a precedent for JLA,Teen Titans & JSA/All-Star crossovers ?
& lets face it , we aren't even talking about crossovers, just "connecting" series - Huntress,Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Teen Titans Spotlight on... etc.

Also, can someone elaborate on the Adam Strange TPB ? When is this out, & what is it about ?
Thanks

Steve O

...Cheated out of what appear to be "mediocre" stories and which (for the most part) do not include the Legion in anything more than a tangential role. Even some of the early LSH stories (from Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen) are only marginally worthy of being included.

What about the pour {sic} fans who spend their hard-earned cash on LSH books that don't even feature the LSH in half the stories? KK is one of the very few characters in LSH that I actively dislike. "Super-karate". Yawn. I'd only pay half-price for a volume I'm only going to half-like.

Sorry, KK should get his own volume when/if the sales would justify it rather than bog down the LSH volumes. Let's see how the readers respond to KK#1 in v12. That's the only fair solution.

In one of the stories today about Marvel's plan to release TPBs of its new Tsunami books immediately after they finish their first arcs, Bill Jemas refers to the theory about delaying publication of trades until well after the floppies have come out, and says that it's never been proven to him that it's a smart way to go. I can only assume that he's referring to Bob.

While I can see the benefits to the direct market of holding off awhile on trade compliations, Marvel's stated purpose of doing these new books primarily for the bookstore market also makes a kind of sense, given that they're going after a market segment (teenagers, specifically girls) that is comfortable buying magna in bookstores, and will probably never frequent comic shops to buy $3 32-page floppies no matter what the publishers or stores do. On the other hand, by using this model instead of simply releasing OGNs, Marvel is essentially admitting that it's counting on old-school, monthly readers willing to pay at least $2.25 every month to foot the bill for making "Namor" TPBs affordable to teenagers at the mall. Given the high price of monthlies, this could easily breed resentment amongst the traditonal readers Marvel needs in order to keep those TPBs reasonably-priced. Jemas says that Marvel sees rapidly-released TPBs as feeders for the next story arc of the monthly, but I don't understand that. Why wouldn't TPB readers just wait for the next trade? I don't see how quick, cheap collections would cause an influx of new readers to shops where they've never been welcome to buy relatively more expensive, shorter, less durable comics.

Thoughts, Bob or anyone else?

Cole

Also, Bob, while *you'd* like to see Jim Aparo's 1970s stuff collected, what are the chances anytime within the next few years--particularly for the PS issues or a B&B best-of? Are they even on the radar screen?

This isn't a question or a request, just some musing on one of my favorite topics, comics anthologies.

If it is true that anthologies are poor sellers and equally true that Superman and Batman are S.R.O. attractions, it makes sense (does it not?) that anthologies prominently featuring The Man of Steel and The Caped Crusader should at least break even and, quite conceivably, then some. Anthologies called, let us say, THE BEST OF ACTION COMICS, THE BEST OF DETECTIVE COMICS, and (if this title isn't too much of a muchness) THE BEST OF WORLD'S FINEST COMICS could serve up generous portions of prime Superman and Batman material published between 1938 and the present day, and still have room for a host of other, admittedly lesser, but nevertheless interesting characters. Flip through 30 or so years' worth of ACTION, DETECTIVE, and WORLD'S FINEST, and whom do we see? (Besides Superman and Batman.) Air Wave, Aquaman, The Black Pirate, Boy Commandos, Congo Bill/Congorilla, The Crimson Avenger, The Green Arrow, Johnny Thunder, The King, King Faraday, Manhunter From Mars, Pow Wow Smith, Robotman, Roy Raymond, The Sandman, Slam Bradley, The Star Spangled Kid, T.N.T. with Dan the Dyna-Mite, Tomahawk, Tommy Tomorrow, The Vigilante, The Wyoming Kid, and Zatara the Master Magician -- among others -- a host of characters who are mostly languishing in limbo, a mountain of material by Ramona Fradon, Simon and Kirby, Sheldon Moldoff, Jimmy Thompson, Mort Meskin, and other luminaries, currently going to waste. What a pity.

Bob will probably get to this one next time, but I wouldn't worry. DC has put out at least one DCU Archive a month for many months now. That's a huge investment in one look that will be irradicated if they change now. Marvel's original look had a serious flaw (the numbering scheme). I don't remember exactly how long, but I remember a big gap between the original look and the next version. I don't remember the length of time between looks 2 and 3. In any case, DC strong commitment to the Archives virtually assures that the look will remain consistent for a long time.
