Hi, Bob- I echo everyone else...thanks again. Great to have a "connection" with an "insider". We Archive fans went for a long time without much in the way of feedback or information. On to my questions: 1.) Have the SHAZAM ARCHIVES been successful enough (in your opinion) to warrant a CAPTAIN MARVEL JUNIOR or MARVEL FAMILY Archive? 2.) Any plans for THE ATOM Vol. 2? 3.) Would DC consider releasing a special edition of FLASH ARCHIVES Vol. 1 with a Carmine Infantino autograph? (He's one of my heroes and I've never had the chance to meet him) 4.) Any chance of seeing a SWAMP THING Archive? The Wein-Wrightson run would be great in hardcover. I'd also support Archiving the Alan Moore run. 5.) Speaking of Mr. Moore...and this might be a sore subject...but do you have any hope for a new WATCHMEN hardcover? The planned 15th anniversary edition got me salavating, and I was very disappointed when I learned the project was scrapped. Maybe a 20th anniversary edition? Thanks, Bob! Jeff IP: Logged |

Sorry, thought of another question. I'm enjoying THE SPIRIT ARCHIVES and can't wait for the really good stuff to start in Vol. 11 or 12. My question/comment is: I would love to see the daily strips reprinted, as well as as much additional Eisner Spirit art as possible (ie: the Kitchen Sink covers, etc.) Finally, and this is a HUGE one...Bob, do you think DC could convince Mr. Eisner to do one, last Spirit story for the final volume of the Archive run? Wouldn't it be amazing to see Eisner bring closure to this great strip? Heck, if he doesn't want to do a new story, it would be great if he just wanted to do a pin-up and show all the characters together one last time...I think there should be something special, possibly something all-new by Mr. Eisner, in the final volume. I proposed this once at a comic con, and the DC staffer said, "Oh, I don't think Will wants to do that." Maybe..but has DC ASKED Will Eisner?? Thoughts? Opinions? IP: Logged |

Bob - glad to hear that a JIMMY OLSEN BY JACK KIRBY collection may be forthcoming. At the risk of becoming known as "Paperback Balkin," let me suggest: please do it in paperback, rather than hardcover. I'd prefer it be full color, as opposed to the "shades of grey" TPBs that were done of the other fourth world material, but I'd prefer a "shades of grey" JIMMY OLSEN tpb than a hardcover. Aw, heck, I don't care if I sound like a broken record, wanting things in softcover rather than hardcover; perhaps some of the other readers on these boards have unlimited budgets, but I don't. I'd prefer to spend $24-30 for a TPB than $45-55 for a hardcover, in most cases. - Frank Balkin IP: Logged |

Great news about more Doom Patrol! Speaking of which, I was looking forward to the Brave and Bold story in a future Doom Patrol Archive. As someone who doesn't buy every archive, I'd don't see any problem including team-ups even if it means duplication. As always, it would have to be on a case by case basis. IP: Logged |

More Doom Patrol...great! Kirby Jimmy Olsen...fantastic! Is there any hope for seeing Golden Age Simon & Kirby in the archives? This stuff really was head and shoulders above the crowd. My two-cents worth on the team-ups: IP: Logged |

Thought of another question! ![]() In the CRISIS ON MULTIPLE EARTHS tps, will they expand to include the non-JLA team-ups? IP: Logged |

On the other hand, a collector who owned the BC Archive might feel cheated if the B&B volume in question consisted in one quarter of its volume of what to him was duplicated and uneccessary material. IP: Logged |

I think DCCP and B&B team ups are to be done on a case-by-case basis. In the case of Doom Patrol, which is a relatively short series, I say collect the team-ups in the DP archive. They are a relatively important part of the DP canon. The Flash/Atom team-up, however, I would collect only in The Brave & The Bold Archives and The Atom Archives. Also, I'd start the B&B Archives at issue #1. I'm not particularly worried about the DCCP Archives, as I have every issue. It would be nice to see such things in a snazzy format, but there are others that I would much rather see if there is any kind of trade-off involved. Bob: Will New Comics #1 ever be reprinted? There was some stir in 2000 that it would be, but I haven't heard anything since. Although the material wouldn't excite the average reader, I think the historical importance would excite Archive fans. Additionally, let us not forget Martian Manhunter. There is a ton of additional archives I would like to see, but for now I'm thrilled that more Doom Patrol is in the works. I never thought I'd have a copy of that or a Golden Age Spectre Archive in my collection, but I do now and I'm thrilled beyond words! More Golden Age stuff would keep me buying archives 12 or more times per year. IP: Logged |

quote: My feeling is that you just start with the Brave & Bold Team-Ups and go straight through. There are already four Batman lines (Batman, Batman: Dark Knight, Batman in World's Finest, Batman: Dynamic Duo), so starting another Batman series (Batman in Brave & Bold) might be overkill. I can understand other people's positions about not including the Metamorpho issues. They didn't feature any team-ups. I can also understand the position of not including the Teen Titans stories, since they would logically fit in a Silver Age Teen Titans Archive, if or when it becomes available. I'm not sure I agree with the stance on the Black Canary/Star-Man issues, as I'm not interested in the Black Canary Archive, but I would like to read those two stories.

quote: I think there would be demand for this due to the fact that it would be in TBP form. I bought a copy of Crisis on Multiple Earths Vol. 1 for my nephew because it was affordable, but there's no way I would buy an Archive for him. I have enough trouble justifying $40 purchases for myself to my wife. JMA IP: Logged |

quote: Well, all the stories in the first Crisis on Multiple Earths book were already reprinted in the JLA archives. Not everyone buys every issue of the archives (I know I just can't afford more than two or three a year nowadays), and I think a lot of people are still partial to trade paperbacks. --Rich IP: Logged |

As I've stated before, one of things that has kept us from approach Mac Raboy and Lou Fine's work is the current technology. Without filming, we have to recreate the pages from actual comics and the technology is not yet refined enough to allow to preserve all of their line work. We're optimistic that day is coming, but not yet. Atom Vol. 2 has come up several times, you'll just have to wait and see. Since we're keeping Len and Bernie's stories in print as a trade paperback, it's not a candidate for Archiving today. WATCHMEN requires extra-special care and treatment so we can remain optimistic but there's no telling what will happen. Our plan today is to include the SPIRIT dailies by the time the final volume comes out. As for the Warren and Kitchen Sink covers, the jury's out. As for Will doing a new story, that's come up but have we directly asked Will, I don't know. Many of us are anxious for more Doom Patrol but don't misunderstand me. Nothing more is on the schedule as of today. Simon & Kirby's work is definitely on our To Do list. We've talked about the Silver Age/Golden Age pairings as a possible volume but not just the GA pairings such as SPECTRE #3 or the SHOWCASE stories. Instead, we were wondering about including the first SA/GA oddball crossover of Batman and Wildcat. New Comics? Gee, that just come up in conversation before Christmas. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Again Bob, thanks for stopping by and answeing our questions. I'd like to know if it has been determined yet how many Spirit archives will be released in 2003. Also, recently, Marvel has had some success reprinting in HC well recieved storylines like Ennis' Punisher and Jones' Hulk. These were quite affordable at around 29.99 each and were nice productions. Does DC plan on doing this as well? Finally, we have now seen two "War: archives, with the release of Rock and Enemy Ace. Can this be perceived as DC's commitment to the War genre in the archive line or to a commitment to Kubert, as he was the artist who illustarted both. I was pleasantly surprised by both archives, especially Rock. Any plans yet for Volume 2 of that series? Also, and I have to ask this one for my wife, what is going on with the Silver Age Flash archives? She absolutely loves these. It's her favorite series. Can we look forward to a Flash archive soon? Thanks IP: Logged |

Thanks Bob once again. It great to hear that the Simon & Kirby stuuff on on the "to do list". I am more familiar with Kirby's 1970's DC works, can someone tell me what work Simon & Kirby did at DC prior to this. IP: Logged |

Bob Commandos. Newsboy Legion. Later issues of Golden Age Sandman. Young Romance (I think). In any case, they invented the romance comic. Someone else will probably remind me of something I've forgotten. IP: Logged |

Bob, If a color Kirby Jimmy Olson (soft or hardcover) sells well, would this open the option of re-issuing the other Fourth World volumes in a similar format? I'd love the whole set in a color version - soft or hardcover. Thanks - Al IP: Logged |

Hi Bob, In regards to your question about team-ups, put me down as another Archive buyer who wholeheartedly agrees with James Friel. In the example you mentioned of a Flash Archive including team-up stories, that would definitely lessen my interest in buying the book. I also agree with James about being far more interested in Brave & the Bold 1-24, than any of the later issues. Thanks, Glenn IP: Logged |

OK, Bob, I'll bite: does this interest in how to approach the archiving of team-ups mean that a B&B Teamups Archive is impending, or are you asking because a call will have to be made soon about including some teamup stories in an individual character archives? IP: Logged |

Bob, Has the Collected Editions Dept. given any thought to celebrating the upcoming 100th Archive? It should be arriving in late '04. If that sounds like something to think about, I'd like to suggest an "Archive Companion" of sorts. In particular, I'd like an essay on what is needed to restore art, and an essay on the whole Archive production process, from the time you decide to do it to when it ships for the stores. An index of all the stories and creators for the first hundred volumes would be welcom, too. Maybe fuller bios of everyone? I'm sure there are plenty of other goodies we could think of, that would of interest to Archive Nation. Again, something to think about. Thanks! IP: Logged |
