Why wouldn't collecting Stars & Stripe in a TPB work, Bob? I've found it hard to get S& S issues 8, 10-14 as of late.
[/QUOTE]

-----------

I think the main reason it wouldn't work is the only way to make it a solid read would be for all 15 (remember the 0 issue) issues to be reprinted at once, and even then it felt like it ended too soon, with a lot of questions left unanswered. There are sub-plots running through the whole book which didn't get resolved until the last half of the series. Printing all the issues at once would make for a $30 book which I doubt very many people would buy. JSA is more of a TBP type series (big story arcs, few one issue stories, etc.) while Stars & STRIPE seemed more like a solid '80's style book similar to Spider-Girl, without any solid beginnings or endings.

BTW if you want those issues (8, 10-14 ), just drop a note to me at joepacheco@lycos.com. I think I have them in the stack that's going to charity.

Bob you said: (While we loved the Superman and Batman Dailies, neither sold well enough for us to continue through the years.)Is it a possiblity that a magazine that focus on reprinting newspaper strips like Comic Revue or The Missing Years to pick up the series? I know that back in the 1970's The Menomonee Falls Gazette ran old Superman and Batman dailies.

My second question is about the Batman and Superman Golden Age Archives. Is it possible to have the series get closer together what I mean is that in the case of Batman series is that Batman: The Dark Knight Series which reprints the Batman issues is up do 1942 while the Batman Archives that reprint the Detective Issues just finish 1946 and the recent World Finest are in 1945.

So what I am basically asking since in the case of both Superman and Batman which doesn't have combine series like in the case of Wonder Woman, Green Lantern etc. So in the case of Golden Age Batman series that can we have more Batman: The Dark Knight Archives so it can catch up to where the Batman Archives is? The same is truth with Superman that the Action Archives has to catch up with the regular Superman Archives.

This thread is now at 327 replies. When I started this I had no idea that it would get this big or last this long. Thanks to Bob G. for all of his answers to our very pertinent questions.

That being said, this is the largest thread I've seen so far on this board. It's even bigger than the Marvel Masterworks thread. That being said I now declear myself EMPEROR of the DC Archives Message Board. I demand TRIBUTE and CONCUBINES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You may have tribute.

Even kudos.

For concubines you're on your own.

One tiny suggestion:

Do NOT go down to the local singles bar and state that you have the longest single thread on the DC Universe Archives message board.

This will not only fail to get you concubines (I've tried!) but it is a real buzzkill for the serious drinkers (What I became after my concubinage plan fell apart).

Good luck, Mike!!

Maybe a new thread should be started since the moderator guy once said the original "Give Us an Archive Board" thread got so big it bogged down the system somehow.

Nah, we should be good for another 20 pages. 1000 replies is the magic number for possible board failure.

And obviously, we'll be looking for an optimal marketing opportunity to release such collections.

Any chance of releasing these first as comic sized hardback books?

I'll second that request. Hard Cover, hi quality paper all the way.

I actually prefer the two separate lines to be archiving two different periods.
That way, if a person doesn't care for, for instance, the Batman from the early '40s that's running in Dark Knight Archives, he or she can still have the late 1940s version that's in the Batman Archives. And Batman in World's finest Archives will give us a nice quick progression from 1940 to the mid-Fifties in five volumes. I like that, and I hope it isn't stretched out over the entire period that it takes one of the two longer Batman series to cover the same years.
I'd like to see the two Superman lines get farther apart, not closer together, too.

i wholeheartedly agree. sometimes the stories seem repetitive, and more variety goes down better. besides, one of my favorite books as a kid was the batman from the 30s to the 70s hardcover. i must have scanned through that thing hundreds of times on weekends. there's good stuff to be had in all the decades, and i'm anxious to get to the 50s and 60s.

also, there is so little continuity between titles and stories back in the day. it really doesn't matter if you read them out of sequence.

Dear Bob...

How about promoting the Quality line (Shazam & co.) to the same status as the THUNDER Agents and Spirit?

That is, giving them three (or four...) archives a year OUTSIDE the regular archive schedule.

If not now, then phase them in as THUNDER Agents comes to its close...

When can we expect to see Superman: The End of the Century in softcover? It's been 3 years since the hardcover came out. Does its name interfere with it, since it is now way past the century's end?

I think the quality of the story is what's preventing the softcover. I sold my copy as soon as I had the chance, and was thankful to find a buyer. It's quite possible DC feels the same. Blah.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, or at least a good day off.

Bob, there's a recent feature on Newsarama about Garth Ennis' War Story books. Are there any plans to collect these? They're one of the first monthlies that I held off buying in order to pick up the (what I saw as inevitable) trade, and now I'm getting nervous.

I thought a good time to release a trade of the first series would be when the second series began, but thatdidn't ahhpen. Maybe when Azzarello's Sgt. Rock hits?

Captain Marvel is a Fawcett character, not Quality. However, I'd love to see a more frequent 'Shazam family' schedule. At the rate we're going, we'll never see the Marvel Family stories, CM Jr., Mary, or Hoppy!

Bob -
Here is what I think should have been in the Jimenez WW TPB's so far and the upcoming JSA TPB:
Gods of Gotham TPB - Issues 164-167 & Legends of the DC Universe Issues 4-5.
Paradise Lost TPB - Issues 168-170, main story from SF 2 & LOTDCU Issues 30-32.
Paradise Found TPB - Issues 171, 174-177, OWAW & main story from SF 3.
Fair Play TPB - Issues 26-31, OWAW, Ann 1 & main story from SF 2.
I've left out WW Issues 172-173 because they've been collected in OWAW TPB V2.

DIANA PRICE, WONDER WOMAN? Are you asking for a collection of the Sekowsky-O'Neil run (approx. 175-204)? Not likely to happen given the more current WW stuff we're collecting. Of course, should the movie finally make it into production....

Every time we launch a number one, we make a commit that, should sales warrant it, we will continue. The exception is Black Canary which was billed as a done-in-one. So yes, when we launched Starman, we intended to complete his run, the same with Spectre and Blackhawk. At no point have we totally abandoned a series given sales, but certainly have slowed down the releases in the hopes of building some demand. We choose our schedule carefully given that commitment.

We thought we'd save everyone some money by planning the Perez WW and JLA collections as softcovers. I don't think we ever talked about hardcover.

Should someone make us a licensing offer to run the strips in other places, no doubt we'd listen to it. But right now, there seems to be very little interest beyond what's currently in print.

We never planned for the Superman/Action and Batman/Dark Knight Archives to parallel each other in terms of era. It's tough given how many more issues of Detective and Action can fit in a volume versus Superman and Batman.

Steven Utley keeps reminding us of the lovely Quality material out there. One of our biggest hesitations is that we might lose some of the fine line work from Reed Crandall and Lou Fine were we to recreate the Ray or Black Condor stories. We keep hoping the technology will improve to allow us to proceed with confidence.

Superman: End of the Century should finally be out in softcover in the secondhalf of 2003. Stuart Immonen's art is lovely in the book.

Garth keeps asking us to collect the War Stories and no doubt we will add them to the schedule at some point.

JSA: Fair Play will contain the Roulette featurette from JSA Secret Files #2 and issues #26-31. We do not intend to run the OWAW one-shot in a trade. Each JSA volume intends to collect a storyline, not be a complete repackaging of all JSA material.

Wonder Woman: Paradise Found will contain issues #170-177, depsite two issues being used in OWAW. Phil Jimenez made a persuasive argument that the material from the monthly works best when run in their entirety. Upon re-reading, we agreed.

OK, I think we're current for the moment.

Thank you Bob for your continued support of these boards - it is much appreciated. We all have our ideas on which Archives should come next (more JLA, Flash and Silver Age Superman for me), however, I am happy, given DCs track record, to leave in your capable hands. This from a long time Marvel fan who cannot believe the mess they have made of their Masterworks programme.

I'm not sure I get the reasoning here.
Could you elucidate?
What I'm having trouble understanding is why it might be perceived by DC to be a bad idea to have several periods of a character's long and varied history all available simultaneously in reprint form. Or is it simply a matter of resources and priorities?

Bob,

Any chance of DC experimenting with the "Crossgen Compendia" format? The slightly reduced TPB size that looks about like a manga book? The first few issues from CG look really impressive and they represent an amazing bargain.

I would LOVE to see some current DC books collected in this way.

When you say that you're not going to put JSA:OWAW in a trade, do you mean the 4th trade? And if so, when are you going to put it and Ann 1 in a trade?
