It would seem to me to make more sense if they had decided to reprint ALL of sub-Mariner's appearances from F.F. #4 on up, considering, like the Hulk, his personal history jumped from book to book to book before he got his own series. The ASTONISH run conceiveably could have started in Vol.2. (But, too late for that now!) But I'm still hoping for a Golden Age Sub-Mariner book!!! Bill everett's work deserves to be seen by future generations (but right now I'd prefer his work be able to be read by THIS generation-- I've already been waiting for decades as it is...) quote: An all-Subby from other comics leading up to his own title would indeed be one hell of a book. Don't think it would quite fit in with the essence of the Masterworks, but perhaps a future trade? Man, that would be sweet! Not only is this the first new reprint material in the new trade dress, it is also the first occasion for Marvel to introduce a new character into the Masterworks canon since way back with Doctor Strange in Vol. 23. I believe that was 1992, making this a 10 year wait! Way to go, Namor! ------------------ IP: Logged |

Sure, imagine a book collecting all the appearances of The Hulk before HE got his series in TALES TO ASTONISH. Or how about all the appearances of The Silver Surfer that came before SILVER SURFER #1 ? (In his case, most would be F.F.'s-- but not all. there was that 2-parter in ASTONISH where he met The Hulk-- and almost cured him, had Hulk not thought he was being attacked and struck out first. With that in mind, you'd have thought S.S. might have reconsidered in all those issues of THE DEFENDERS where he was teamed up-- more or less-- with The Hulk, later on. (Oh, well, ancient history...) Hey, how about a "coffee-table" type book-- tabloid-size, and hardbound, that would reprint all the Lee-Kirby stories featuring GALACTUS??? (There was a Marvel Treasury Edition once in the 70's that reprinted F.F. #48-50 at the size of the original artwork-- but due to the way Jack had stories run-over from one issue to another, they wound up cutting out the beginning of F.F. #48 and the end of F.F. #50 to make it seem more "cohesive" and "complete"-- ironic they'd have to CUT pages out to do that, but Jack was kinda goin' nuts playing around with storytelling and format at the time, wasn't he?) Will- the quick answer is Tales to Astonish #70-85, and FF#4. Answers to that and many other Masterworks questions can be found at my site (plug!!! ) linked below!------------------ IP: Logged |

SUB-MARINER MARVEL MASTERWORKS I was sure this book was going to be not the first silver age premiere series with issuues 1,2,3... but it was more like the first appearance instead with team-ups with DD,Hulk... the reason I did not buy it in the end I did not buy it I prefer instead buying a 12 issue mini series from 1988 and since I was out for a HARDCOVER book today I prefered to get DC ARCHIVE ALL STAR vol.3,breaking again my golden age rule of one archive per character or team PS:for sure characters like SUB-MARINER,HUMAN TORCH & CAPTAIN AMERICA deserve separate GOLDEN AGE MARVEL MASTERWORKS BOOKS where each characters would get their very 1st stories out;and a team and mixed other less known character books would be nice too Personally I would go as far as putting good money on an all out golden age VISION book as well and golden age ANGEL as well ------------------ IP: Logged |

According to our own Bill Nolan, who kindly posted the info on the Masterworks Message Board (see site linked below), the new Subby Masterworks is out now, and contents differ considerably from what was originally announced. Instead of reprinting FF#4, they include Subby's appearance in the Golden Age Marvel Comics #1, and Namor's appearance in Daredevil #7. They also add two more issues of Tales of Suspense continuity, with issues 86 and 87. That clocks in at 270 pages! Wow! Now go get this book, folks! ------------------ IP: Logged |

I went to my comic shop today to take a look at the new Sub-Mariner Masterworks. You know, size it up, kick its tires, and check to see if it would make a nice impromptu gift to myself. Alas, my shop didn't get a copy in. I'm still a bit on the fence with this one, actually. But, I'm definately looking forward to the "Spider-Man" vol. 2 edition, which I think is planned for the very near future. IP: Logged |

If you want to get an idea of what these new volumes look like, try http://images.dhorse.com/coverst/s/submarinermmhc1.jpg http://images.dhorse.com/coverst/m/masterworksXMENvol1.jpg http://images.dhorse.com/coverst/m/mmwasmhc.jpg The Spidey picture seems to be cropped; most of the "frame" is missing. I nabbed these from the "Things From Another World" website. TFAW is a subsidiary of Dark Horse, and runs 3 shops here in the Portland area; it's where I get my Archives (and soon, Masterworks). I just picked up the Sub-Mariner book, and I love this thing! The change of stories at the beginning was a pleasant surprise, especially the inclusion of the Golden Age story. The Daredevil story was a puzzling choice, but it ties in (slightly) with the first Tales To Astonish story. It would have been nice to have a story that wasn't already in an archive, though. Perhaps something from the 40s-50s. Oh well, it's still a grand masterwork. IP: Logged |

I haven't seen the book, but wouldn't that be SUSPENSE #79 & 80? It was a 3-parter, with these 2 IRON MAN episodes taking place between ASTONISH #81 & 82-- the latter being the concluding fight between Subby & I.M. done by Roy Thomas & Jack Kirby (because Stan went on vacation & Gene got sick at the same time!). I'm not sure, prof. Bill Nolan reported the contents at Tales To Astonish #70-87. I haven't seen the book myself. Maybe Bill could clarify....Bill! oh Bill! Can you clarify the contents of the Sub-Mariner Masterworks? ![]() ------------------ IP: Logged |

Nope. Even tho' a text box at the beginning of Astonish 82 warns readers to read Suspense 80 first, the TOS story is not included. It's just Marvel Comics 1, Daredevil 7, and TTA 70-87. - Bill IP: Logged |

I think the volume looks great! I am pleased to see Marvel Comics #1 and DD #7 reprinted in this volume. I can never read DD #7 too many times! Plus, having added the latter issues of TOS from what Marvel previously announced, bringing this book to 270 pages, we're not being shorted! My one disappointment, especially after seeing the X-Men volume, is that the covers in the Sub-Mariner volume are not full-sized. One thing I do prefer in the Masterworks over the archives volumes is that the Masterworks pages appear larger. There isn't alot of white space between a panel edge and the end or side of the page. All in all, this latest volume is a great book, and a great choice for the first new volume in some time! IP: Logged |

quote: "Marvel has done great stuff but without Dc they wouldn't be there. Marvel is a facsimile in many senses of Dc. It's clear that they wanted a piece of the cake." What is important- is not who came first, or who is copy who. It is the fact that young fans, as well as old, are given the chance of reading and collecting classic comicbook series, in a series of hard cover archive books. What a nice way to read favorite classic runs. Building a library of comic stories that you injoyed as a child (or are getting a chance to read for the first time)which you can read and re-read for the rest of your life. These Archives and Masterworks, are not just some printed reprints, that of which, few will make it thru the next 20 years. They are tombs, which gives comic fans (and future generations) a way to make this great hobby, a treasure trove keepsake. In which they can injoy at thier convience and then pass on to a new generation. Expensive??? If the buyers, sole intention of purchasing them, is for a quick read thru and then a quick sale. Well- yes they are. IP: Logged |

"Even tho' a text box at the beginning of Astonish 82 warns readers to read Suspense 80 first, the TOS story is not included." I haven't been folloing too closely, but have they gotten around to doing a 2nd IRON MAN Masterworks? If so, they clearly want / expect fans to buy than AND the Subby book-- just like in the old days. I first read all 3 parts in the all-reprint IRON MAN ANNUAL #1, which also happened to be my first exposure to Gene Colan art. I'm not sure I've ever fully recovered from the "shock" (heeheehee). I got my hands on the ASTONISH issue a few years ago because that has long been my favorite Jack Kirby fight scene-- and I wanted a nice, clear, sharp original (instead of the fuzzy reprint I'd been looking at all those years). Hey Prof, you should visit my site- the IM Masterworks Vol. 2 has been announced there for some 4 or 5 months. It comes out in June. It won't, however, run up into the run of issues covering the Subby crossover. ------------------ IP: Logged |

You mean,"the announced content won't include the cross-over". Given the difference in what was announced and what was delivered for Subby, could Shell Head get to that story if the page count goes up to the 270 range? IP: Logged |

dylanfan Member |
The page count, as it was told to me by former editor Bob Greenberger, would be in the 270 page range. It would pick up where the last Shellhead Masterworks left off, with ToS #51, and go through #67. Conceivably, IM Masterworks #3 would reach the Subby crossover issues. ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: You seem a little confused, Joe. Both DC Archives and Marvel Masterworks are priced at $49.95. Originally, Masterworks were cheaper at $34.94 each, but the price went up (along with the new trade dress) this year. I'm not sure why it should be considered "normal" to pay more for DC. So, I really don't know what you're trying to say here. Neither series seems better quality in terms of printing, binding, or a better deal in terms of price-per-page. IP: Logged |
