quote: Yeah,I'd guess either the GA Superman or the GA Batman book, and it'll have been only 4 months since Dynamic Duo, so the Superman is probably more likely. For the rest of the year, I'm somewhat arbitrarily guessing All-Star 8 in July, Supergirl 2 in August, a GA Batman in September, World's Finest 3 in November, and Plastic Man in December. Fourteen this year makes me very happy. I wonder if the intention is to remain at 14 in 2004, or to ratchet it up another notch or two, to 15 or 16. IP: Logged |

What I Think: June – Challengers of the Unknown Archives #1 (it’s slated for 1st quarter 2003) July – Golden Age Green Lantern Archives #3 – Along with Wonder Woman it’s the only non-Supes and Bat continuation isn’t slated or ruled out. GA GL sells a little better than Wonder Woman and she is not as due. August – Hawkman Archives #2 – Because he has a nice current series September – Batman Archives #6 – Because it’s content is significantly different from BWF October - Superman in World’s Finest Archives #1 – We need a new GA #1 this year and this fits the bill. November – Plastic Man Archives #5 and Green Lantern Archives #5 – two proven winners so one is not slighted. December – Supergirl #2 My list is Silver heavy since I think they might be conservative on their first attempt to saturate the marked, esp in a potential slow economy with a war possibly on. Gold All-Star #10 Silver Challengers #2 D. IP: Logged |

I still think we'll see a NTT or Titans archive this year.. IP: Logged |

D's listing is as likely as any other, and I think his reasoning for being heavy on Silver makes a lot of sense; it's the safe thing to do. GA Green Lantern? I dunno. The Diamond numbers weren't very stong for it. But hey, I'm not complaining if it happens! IP: Logged |

quote: Oh David, don't do this to me. You're getting my hopes up where I never even thought to have them. It never entered my mind that a third volume of Alan Scott stories would come out this year. If you know something I don't, great. If this really is a wild guess... well, shame on you for torturing me like that. Gary "of course I'm only kidding about the 'shame on you' part, but I really didn't even think it was a possibility. On the other hand, I see you don't even list GA Flash for next year, so in that respect my balloon was burst" O. IP: Logged |

I have to admit your argument for a Silver-heavy schedule in '03 makes sense. Of course, 8/6 would qualify for that too... Only a year and a half seems an awfully short wait between volumes of GA Green Lantern. I'm thinking 2005 is more likely. I don't recall GA Starman 2 having been ruled out for this year in any statement we've seen. Am I forgetting something, or do you have a missing piece of information here? For 2004, I think we'll see: Adam Strange 1 for a total of 14, split 7/7 Gold/Silver, with the possibility of adding a couple of additional volumes that could be available on relatively short notice late in the year if further immediate expansion seems justifiable upon evaluation of this year's sales. Almost anything from the '70s and some from the late '60s should be quick and easy as these things go--JLA 9 or Legion 13 would be obvious choices, but so would Jonah Hex 1 be, or any '70s DC Kirby, as well as the Ditko Charlton material, which we've been told has good stats available. I have info. I am pretty sure Starman is out for this year. D. IP: Logged |

Rats. I just got vol 1 in the mail yesterday and am loving it so far. Great stuff there. Gotta love those GA Gardner Fox stuff. His pseudo science was really interesting, but he made it seem plausable enough that I could follow along (more so than in in at least JLA 1 and 2, the only JLA volumes I have so far). Ted Knight's a great character, and I'd love to complete his GA run. Chris IP: Logged |

Rats indeed. That does make a GA Green Lantern volume (or a volume 1 of something out of left field) look more likely. I'd think they'd push GA GL 3, if that's the choice, as far toward the end of the year as possible, since vol.2 only came out in January of 2002. IP: Logged |

Why would GA GL Vol. 3 be more likely than GA Flash Vol. 2? I find it interesting that, if this were to be true, both Hal Jordan and Alan Scott would be outrunning Barry Allen and Jay Garrick. And that hardly seems fair. :; ------------------ IP: Logged |

I find it interesting that D. Stepp apparently thinks a GA Hawkman is out until at least 2005 (I'd rather see Dr. Fate myself), and that James thinks Plastic Man #6 won't happen in 2004. Any particular reasoning behind these surmises? I've got my own guesses (in the former case that Dr. Fate would be a natural sequel of sorts to a successful Spectre Archive, and in the latter that maybe sales are slowing on Plastic Man to the point where it'll be made bi-annual) but I'd like to know what you're thinking. I'm also intrigued that David thinks DC will finally introduce the first 70s-era #1 with Kirby's Demon. Actually, David, could you clarify: does "my 14" mean titles you think will actually happen or those you'd personally like to see? Cole IP: Logged |

I'm not by any means convinced that Plastic Man won't happen in 2004, but it may be that the series is cooling off just a little bit--enough to warrant dropping back to every 2 years. Of course, that could well be entirely wrong. On looking over my 2004 list, I'm inclined to think that if we do get Superboy 1, there won't be another GA Superman volume, so that slot could be Plastic Man, or GA Green Lantern, or GA Starman, or Wonder Woman, or something new. Can't speak for DStepp, but my reason for omitting GA Flash from this year's list is that Bob G pretty clearly said at some point that it isn't happening yet, and that it's one of his proposals for 2004. Both versions of Titans in one year, DStepp? Do you know something, or is this a guess? Someone's mentioned some sort of upcoming media tie-in (a TV show?), but even so, both in one year seems excessive. IP: Logged |

quote: Cartoon Network is going to run a Teen Titans cartoon featuring Marv Wolfman's version of the team, more or less, minus Wonder Girl and Kid Flash. DC is overhauling the current Titans comic to look more like the lineup of the show. A concurrent upswing in TT and NTT reprint material would make sense. Cole IP: Logged |

quote: Don't know how I feel about that. There should defenetly be some more variety in the line. We'd probably be a lot better off with a more varied line, and as much as I'd rather see TT vol1 than NTT vol 2, if NTT is definte, I'd say wait a little while before bringing out their silver age counterparts. If anything, I think it might kill the orders for NTT. IP: Logged |

At this point, I think Comic Cavalcade 1 is more likely than either GA GL of GA Flash. Dr. Fate has a mini-series coming up sometime, I'm assuming this year or next. Also Dr. Fate beat Hawkman in DStepp's poll, which I find a little suprising. This might give Dr. Fate a bump up since Hawkman is more of a sure thing that will sell in any year. IP: Logged |

IIRC, weren't we expecting a third Kirby collection of some kind? I thought Mark Evanier was writing 3 intros for various things. We've got Challengers soon, then Jimmy Olsen in some format, but that leaves something else. Maybe that won't come until 2004, though. Any guesses? Does anyone think DC would take a chance on a Boy Commandoes or Newsboy Legion? Fast-track on Fourth World? IP: Logged |

A color Jimmy collection opens the door for matching Fourth World volumes, but I think Bob G. said that DC would have to wait and see how Jimmy does before we get more Fourth World volumes. Of course, Bob likes to have fun with us, so its possible that they are confident in Jimmy and have already started work on one of the other titles. Newsboy Legion will be before Boy Commandos in my opinion due to the current Superman and Kirby Jimmy connections. Might be more likely than I think. However, I wouldn't say that publishing either one would be "taking a chance." There are too many Kirby fans out there who buy nothing else. I don't think quotes from creators are very accurate. Jack Burnley was under the impression that all of his stories were in Starman Volume 1, but they aren't. I've seen other, but none come to mind right now. There are only three words that I consider reliable in Mark Evanier's statement (which I vaguely remember): three, introductions, and Kirby. I don't believe that any of these introdcutions are necessarily for an Archive, although Challengers Vol. 1 seems almost certain. Nor do I see any reason that Evanier couldn't have been asked to write two intros for Challengers, since DC has already announced both volumes. If it's not Newsboy or Challengers Vol. 2, I'd predict the Demon. IP: Logged |

quote: From Mark Evanier's site (1/30/03): "THE EDITOR has revealed it over on the DC Comics Message Board, so I might as well mention it here: DC will be bringing out two volumes reprinting the Jack Kirby issues of Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen. Yes, they'll be in color. No, the Superman and Jimmy Olsen heads -- redrawn by others in their original printings -- will not be restored or retouched to Kirby's version. (That's really not technically possible.) I dunno when they'll be out but I turned in the foreword for the first volume a few months ago. And I've just finished the intro for the first of two volumes that will reprint Jack's work on Challengers of the Unknown. If you've never read either of these series, you're in for a real treat." ------------------ IP: Logged |

So now we're told to expect in 2003 another Golden Age volume 1, which has "broad appeal", however you want to define that, and which has been worked on for a long time and is now ready because the material finally became available. On the surface it sounds like Superboy. So much so that I'm going to assume that it is. And if it's Superboy, how does that affect the chances of Supergirl and/or World's Finest for 2003? Assuming a Silver/Gold balance of 8-6, we now think we know all six GA entries (always assuming All-Star and Plastic Man, and presuming that the Batman choice is Batman vol.6). IP: Logged |

Bob has hinted that All-Star might not be published annually anymore. I think there is a decent chance that it will be replace by Comic Cavalcade. I agree with Hawkman. I'm having trouble choosing the last two. If I were in charge, it would be Atom and Doom Patrol, but I think Flash and World's Finest also have good chances. However, my opinion will probably change as soon as I hit the submit button. IP: Logged |

My revised estimate: Jan - Aquaman 2004 Jan - New Teen Titans 2 D. Damn they still need to increase output!!! IP: Logged |

quote: They sure do. But this year has three more volumes than last. If it works, they'll do it again soon. I'm in agreement with your whole proposed schedule for 2003 except that I'm dubious about Green Lantern. Of the three strong possibilities that had volumes in '02 (Flash, Doom Patrol, Green Lantern), Flash came earliest and Doom Patrol sold best. I'd rank them both as more likely, Doom Patrol first. But I still think Atom vol.2 is more likely than any of them. Doesn't guessing GA Hawkman and Dr.Fate in the same year violate the principle of conservation of high-profile Golden Age features? I won't venture any guesses as to months of issuance, but my latest revision of the 2004 schedule is:
We overlap on 10 volumes for 2004, and one of your 2003 picks (GL 5) is on my 2004 schedule as well. If they do 16, add Demon and a Ditko Charlton volume, or Jonah Hex. Of course, there'll probably be something outrageously unsexpected.... IP: Logged |
