There's enough Ditko Captain Atom for a regular and a skinny volume, I think. Someone mapped it a few months ago. Since the Charlton characters are part of the DCU now, I favor simply doing them as standard DC Archives, just as the Fawcett and Quality characters have been done. IP: Logged |

One possibility I haven't seen mentioned is Doom Patrol 2. With its phenomenally high advance order, even a modest level of reorders surely would make this a sure thing for continuation, and a possible candidate for fast-tracking. IP: Logged |

Wow. A fast tracked Doom Patrol would sure make a heck of a lot of people really, really happy. Myself included. I had never read any orginal DP issues before I got DP Archive v1, and I am loving it! I can't wait for the next volume. I've even started going back to the Morrison series (well, I got the Crawling From The Wreckage tpb, which I enjoyed, but not as much as the original team). DStepp, based partly on answers and discussion on the Golden Age thread I started a few days ago, I've come around to agreeing with you on the question of the wisdom of DC's rationing its high-profile Golden Age first volumes. I don't think we'll see Hawkman v.1 this year now. I still think, however, that if there are to be 14 archives this year, 6 (or 7) will be Golden Age. I'm thinking now that the most likely candidate for the unallocated slot (in the presumed continued absence of Superboy) is Starman 2. Or if it's to be a volume 1 with a lower profile than Hawkman, Sandman, Dr, Fate, Robin or Green Arrow, maybe it might be a Simon & Kirby title--Newsboy Legion, perhaps?--but that's a much longer shot and I don't really expect it. Something could always come out of left field, of course, and probably will for at least one of these slots. My revised prediction: IP: Logged |

quote: I hope you're prediction is correct, because the only book on that list I'd *really* want to get on release day would be Plas V5. A schedule like this would give me some breathing room to go back and get things like Enemy Ace and Aquaman, which I missed on initial orders. And I find myself hesitating on buying older Archives because I'm waiting to see what the next $19.95 back-to-press book is going to be. Cole IP: Logged |

From James' list, my first day buys would include Hawkman vol 2 and Plas vol 5. The rest don't really excite me, but this would allow me to pick up THUNDER Agents vol 1 and Dynamic Duo vol 1. IP: Logged |

The ones I'd be most excited about would be Plastic Man, All-Star (they're really cookin' now), and World's Finest (another all-or-mostly Dick Sprang volume). IP: Logged |

Any other thoughts? I keep thinking I must have overlooked some Golden Age probability, since this year looks a bit light in that department, but process of elimination keeps the number of likely candidates down. IP: Logged |

All-Star and Batman are always first day buys for me. For some reason, I keep thinking an Adam Strange archive is imminent. I don't know why.... IP: Logged |

I'm with jape on the strong possibility of the NTT V2, with the cartoon and new comic on the horizon. I can't imagine it would take DC very long to pull that book together, and it has been forever since the first volume. For me, it would mean another month I could skip and save for something I missed. As far as Doom Patrol goes, I'm betting DC will use a version of D. Stepp's rationing logic--given that it's only potentially a 5-volume series, I think they'd make the book bi-annual. Those series that currently come out every year benefit from much longer publishing histories--Plas, LSH and (to a lesser degree) All-Star could afford to be annual not only because they've maintained their popularity many volumes in, but because there's just so much material to publish. Published annualy, Doom Patrol would be done in just four years. There's an argument to be made for striking while the iron is hot, but I think DC would like to know there's a book it can go back to for semi-guarranteed strong sales ten or more years from now. This makes me wonder how the eventual ending of the All-Star Archives line with V11 will affect continuing sales of the previous volumes, if at all. Will knowing they're all published and attainable encourage more people to pick up the books, or will the interest fade with the absence of anything new to look forward to? Cole IP: Logged |

I earlier advocated the possibilty of a Ditko volume, as it makes sense to entice creator-focused Archive buyers (much like the spate of recent Kubert volumes, and the initiation of Kirby with Challengers). I'm sticking to this prediction, however modifying it from Charlton content to a Creeper-based archive. An earlier post brought this up as a candidate -- and with the Vertigo Creeper launch, this just makes too much sense. It's coming, I can hear the maniacal laughter getting closer.... IP: Logged |

I don't think we'll see any more new #1 volumes this year. I certainly hope we don't -- we've got our 4 already (Batman: DD, Aquaman, Spectre, and Challengers) and we need to ration those out. If we do get another #1, though, it should definitely be a GA to keep the balance a little closer between GA and SA. Since we know GA Flash #2 is out and NTT #2 is apparently next year, I'm hoping (and believing) that we'll see Starman #2. That's great with me -- I'd love to see a series finish up. Hopefully we'll see more series actually completed in the future. IP: Logged |

quote: I don't have the time to really think a lot about this now. I had an idea the other day, but I'm not sure that it is a good idea. Bob has suggested that we might not see All-Star on an annual basis. Maybe we'll see Comic Cavalcade 1 this year instead of All-Star. As far as NTT goes, here's what Bob G. said on 2/3 (Thanks to gothamcityfan for his index to Bob's answers):

quote: At last years (Phila.) Creation convention I spoke with Carmine Infantino about (among other things) the possibility of an Adam Strange volume. At that time he indicated that there had been some interest from (some source) at DC but that it wasn't a go after all. I guess things could have changed since then (July was it?) so it is still conceivable that it could appear this year. I would love to see it but remain doubtful. Carmine and I would also love to see Detective Chimp reprinted in some capacity. He laughingly felt that it would not ever happen, but said he enjoyed doing that feature more than any other. As far as first day buys go, the upcoming Spectre is one for me. Of the others listed so far on this thread Hawkman #2 would also be one for me. But where oh where is Silver Age Superman for this silveragesuperfan?! IP: Logged |

You know, I like the idea of actually finishing a few archive lines. I get so excited about all the #1's coming out that I tend to forget how nice it would be to have the completed runs of these books. Granted, for some lines, we're nowhere near completion, but they could run out Doom Patrol for 4 more years, or give us one more volume of Starman. What good is being a completist (as many of us are), when nothing ever gets completed? IP: Logged |

It now looks as if the "something else" referred to by Bob G. is Elfquest. While my interest is limited (I have the four Donning hardcovers, and the later material pretty much lost me), I think it's a very smart move and will be good for DC and the industry in general. This doesn't change my opinion on how many DCU volumes we should expect this year--I still think 13 is the most likely number, with a good chance of 14. It sounds as if Elfquest will involve very little production work on DC's part. I'd imagine that the main way it would affect the scheduling of other DC Archives would be DC's reluctance to flood the market with material that competes with other DC product, and since the Elfquest audience isn't the Golden Age DC Universe audience, I doubt that will be a major factor in Archives scheduling. Cool! Thanks, DStepp. Any further info (or intuitive feeling) on the Gold/Silver balance? Your last published educated guess had it at, I believe 5/9, which seems lopsided to me.... IP: Logged |

Cool! Thanks, DStepp. (Hmmm -- I've heard that somewhere before.) As I've posted elsewhere, that Challengers volume seems natural to pair another volume with, since it's cheaper than a regular Archive. The best guess is that Challengers will be in the next solicitation, so hopefully we'll see soon for that month. As for the other doubled-up month, my first thought was December, but I'll have to review when Tor, Spirit, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, etc. are scheduled and find a month without any of those. It's more likely we'll get 2 DCU Archives in a month with no outer-universe Archives. Perhaps we're building to getting 2 Archive-type volumes every month, whether it's 2 DCU Archives or a DCU Archive plus something like the Spirit? IP: Logged |

We aren't far from that now. With 14 DCU Archives, 3 Spirits, 2 THUNDER Agents and a Tor, we're at 20, not counting Elfquest or the Neal Adams Batman volume for this year. Months with only one high-end hardcover are already in the minority. IP: Logged |

Best guess for the known non-DCU stuff is Aug and Nov or Dec for Spirit, Q3 for Tor (V1 was July, V2 was Sept.), and Nov or Dec for THUNDER Agents. Last July saw Mad. September also saw the Authority The months that are open: We'll get at least 1 Elfquest book, probably in July; DC'll want to strike while the iron is hot, and that Newsaram interview mentioned the Pinis have the proofs back from the printer, so this should happen pretty quickly. That puts Tor in September, and the doubled up DCU months are June and October. We saw Enemy Ace and Shazam last October, so that's no big stretch. So, what should go with Challengers? How about the GA Superman book? IP: Logged |
