Rumor has it we're getting this one early, so away we go!

So far, we've run 3 contests, and nobody has aced it - the close being 3 for 4. The object is to guess which 4 covers are selected for the back of this volume.

We have 10 covers to choose from, one being a reprint giant which probably won't make it, but I'll throw it in for completeness. The GCD is down again, so I can't check credits, but I know Neal Adams did 66, 67 and 70. If anyone knows the credits on the others feel free to chime in.

Here's the slate:

JLA #61
JLA #62
JLA #63
JLA #64
JLA #65
JLA #66
JLA #67
JLA #68
JLA #69
JLA #70

My picks:

61 - love the two-faced hero/villain combo
64 - Intro. of Red Tornado, plus a great cover to boot!
65 - Part 2 of the JLA/JSA team-up
70 - One of the Adams covers figures to make it, and I think this one's the best with the Creeper as an added bonus.

Good luck! (Now I'm going to cross my fingers, and hope these links work!)

It figures - there's always one troublemaker in the bunch!

Let me try that last one again:

JLA #70

Here goes...
I ruled out 67 straight off the bat as it's the reprint issue, 62 and 65 I wasn't sure would work shrunk down to thumbnail size. 66 and 68 didn't work for me, leaving 61,63, 64, 69 and 70.

I think 63's the least likely of those five, so my four choices are...
61
64
69
70.

I'm going for:
#61--The split-faces effect is just too good (and too effective even at reduced size) not to be included
#64--stunning shot of the new Red Tornado shattering the JSA meeting table
#65--the members displayed in niches along a corridor as the silhouette of a jubilant villain fills the foreground (looks like an Infantino layout to me).
#66--a Neal Adams shot of the mambers fleeing in terror toward the camera, pursued by laughably ineffectual villains.

Close, but no pickle: #68 and #70.

Here goes nothing....

61 (Lotsa members, lotsa villians)
63 (My own very first Justice League issue...sigh...how can it NOT make the Back 4? I remember thinking "What is this Justice League" and "Why did Superman beat up Batman?")
66 (Justice League scared ... Justice League run away)
69 (Green Arrow being chastised by a group thumbs down)

The only issue I actually bought when it first came out was no. 63. I still like that issue, even though the Roussos inks don't do much for Sekowsky--and this is the last Fox/Sekowsky issue. So that one goes on my back four.

I would like to see 67--since it's one of those great Adams covers--inspired no doubt by the cover of Detective that introduced Robin. But as it's a reprint cover it will never appear on the back four.

The other cover that springs out at me is the one for 66--mainly because of Wonder Woman. This is the last time Earth 1 Diana will appear in her traditional Wonder Woman garb on a JLA cover for many years (and many archive volumes). So that goes on my back four.

There has to be at least one JLA/JSA crossover issue cover. So of the two, I think it has to be 64, because of its dramatic introduction of Red Tornado. Even though I think 65 is a more intriguing cover.

I'm not as impressed by any other covers. 62 is a better cover, but I'll pick 69 (because it reflects the changing look of the membership).

So my final back four would be:

63
64
66
69

My picks:

61 - a classic cover. But notice how the flesh on the villains is darker than the hero's? That's worthy of a thread all by itself, no?

62 - my 4th choice, it wins by being less of a cliche than the other choices. However the large amount of black may get it rejected on a dust jack that is already overwhelmingly black. My 5th choice is #66. If the colors are to be considered, I'd put #66 in place of #62.

64 - a great, dynamic cover, featuring two long-time Leaguers (although no one knew that at the time!) A vision of things to come.

69 - the defeated, disgraced hero. Bright colors and Diana Prince.

Regarding #68: jeez, that's hideous! Who was responsible for that thing?

I'll switch one:

I never tried guessing the covers before, but here goes:

My picks concur with India Ink's:
63
64
66
69

My only concern is that the Creeper cover on 70 looks pretty good, and it might beat out one of the others.

But I'm standing with the four I've listed.

I love to play, but I don't always do too well. Anyway, my picks are #61, #64, #69, and #70.

OK - I finally found what I think are reliable credits for these covers:

61-63: Mike Sekowsky/George Roussos
64: Dick Dillin/Jack Abel
65: Dick Dillin/Joe Giella
66-67: Neal Adams
68: Carmine Infantino/Sid Greene
69: Dick Dillin/Murhy Anderson
70: Neal Adams

My guess: 61 (because it's a unique cover), 62, 64, and 70 (the latter three just because those are the issues I own from this volume). I'm looking forward to catching up to this era. As much as I love Mike Sekowsky, I've always liked everything from the Dick Dillin run better. Something about his work... I'm only on volume 2 now, but after I've caught up with All-Star (early next year), the next series I fast-track may be JLA. JLA or Legion anyway.

Arrrgggghhh!

I meant to choose #69, but covered up the window I had it on, and forgot about it.

My real choices (if we're allowed to change) are: #61, #64, #66, #69.

My guesses:

61 - first cover of the group and the split villains.
63 - shows them all with Superman beating them
65 - again, shows them all plus part two of the JLA/JSA team up
70 - last cover of the group and spotlights the guest appearance by the Creeper

My guesses :

#61
#62
#65
#69

#61 is too cool and #62 is too dramatic, despite the use of the thick black border. I think it'll make the cut. Besides, they always use one cover that no one thinks they'll use.

#64 is actually my favorite of the bunch, but it doesn't have any JLA members, so I pick #65, which features Superman and Batman very prominently.

Just to be contrary, I'll guess that they won't include any of the Adams covers, even though #70 feautures the breathtaking debut of Mindgrabber Kid. So, #69 makes it by default, because it's the best of the remaining covers. #'s 63, 66, and 68 are just horrible.

What do I get if I win?

Damn. I didn't realize 67 was a reprint issue when I looked at all the covers. It's my favorite cover of them all, save for the Red Tornado cover. Should I wimp out and take it out of my list?

I think not! #67 will be one of the back four!!!!!
