Ok, I'm considering purchasing my first DC "War" Archive, but I have no idea of which one to get. Can some of you give me brief rundowns and recommendations as to whether to go with Blackhawk, Sgt. Rock, or Enemy Ace.

Thanks in advance!

Gary "I think most of you at least have an idea of what I like" O.

I did see that, but it didn't give me enough of what I'm looking for. I not only want recommendations (and why's for such a recommendation), but I'm also looking for some type of basic summary of each Archive. Nothing extensive, but some basics about each character/book.

Gary "if there's any good links online for such summaries, I'd gladly visit them" O.

Shoot! You mean no one can even give me a basic summary of each one of these comics. I really don't have any knowledge of any of them. I have NEVER read one page of Sgt. Rock, Blackhawk, or Enemy Ace.

Come on guys. Someone give me something to go on.

Gary "boy, I thought I'd come back today and have at least 3 or 4 new posts to read" O.

Thanks Chris! I had visited your site on numerous occasions, but flat out hadn't thought about it when trying to get info on these three characters/Archives. That's what I'm looking for (well, that and some serious recommendations from folks that had already purchased them).

Gary "thanks again for the quick response" O.

Sgt. Rock is great. Interested art/storytelling. Great stories and covers. But then again, our tastes are usually as opposite as can be so you may want to avoid Sgt. Rock like the plague.

Gee, FOG, with your predilection towards golden-agers, I thought you'd probably checked out the "Blackhawk" volume by now. A really nice addition to the archive line. Some top-notch art, and generally good stories. But, I've never really thought of "Blackhawk" as a 'war' comic, oddly enough. It always seemed more typical of 'adventure' fare, despite the wartime backdrop. Can't guarantee you'll like it, but it has a lot going for it.

Also, as a side-note, "Blackhawk" was a hugely popular title in its day. Certainly in the top ten (if not top five) of all comic-book heroes back then. I've talked to so many people who were kids in the 1940s, about comic book memories, and "Blackhawk" is cited consistently.

While I do admit to some cheerleading for a couple of Golden Age Archives, I actually like all the "Ages" and don't mind trying different things.

To be honest, I am torn between all three of these, but I believe my first selection will come down to either Sgt. Rock or Blackhawk. One minute I lean toward the first, then the second. I sincerely don't know which one to pick. I guess I'll eventually get all three.

Gary "I lean toward the GA Archives, but alot of that leaning is based on scarcity/pricing of the originals and plain curiosity" O.

Just to confuse you further, then, let me put in a special plug for Enemy Ace.
It's true that especially in the early stories, it can be repetitious, but that's true of all Kanigher writing, including Sgt. Rock.
And the WWI flying milieu is more interesting, to me at least, than the endless WWII infantry background of Rock. I'd call Kubert's art equally gorgeous in both--though he has more room to exhibit his mastery of negative space in Enemy Ace.

"... to exhibit his mastery of negative space ..."

Wait a minute! I thought the Master of Negative Space was a member of the Doom Patrol ! ... or was it the Brotherhood of Evil ?

Adding my two cents, you simply cannot go wrong with the Rock. I absolutely loved this archive. Many of the stories(not a fan of Kahniger myself) were touching, and the artwork complimented the stories. I found the stories in Rock to be far superior to the stories in Enemy Ace, whcih I found to be aimless and repetitive. The dialogue in Enemy Ace was also stunted as far as I am concerned, and Kubert's work looked a bit hurried and messy.

If you ever do get Enemy Ace Archives pick up a copy of The Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told. It reprints Detective Comics 404 (1970) "Ghost of the Killer Skies". A fun little ditty about Batman vs. Enemy Ace. I'd tell you more, but I don't want to spoil it for you.

Well guys, I went crazy tonight and ordered all three from Overstock.com (since they had a $10 off special that ended today). I hope I did the right thing. I also hope Overstock doesn't screw me in any way. It's my first order with them.

Strangely enough, even though I love the Bats, I don't have the GBSET. So after I read Enemy Ace, I'll pick it up. Thanks for that heads up, Chris.

Until last night, yea! Danged Jayhawks screwed me up bad!

No, actually I just saw the great prices $27.99 per Archive, plus the $10 off deal that was expiring last night, and decided the time was right.

Gary "I'm not gonna know what to do when all three come - which one do I read first?" O.
