Sounds good to me! I've always had a soft spot for the guy. Seems like a natural. Bob did say some non spandex Archives could see the light of day next year.

David, if you kill for this archive, the police will figure it out in fifteen minutes.

Likewise, if I kill for a Golden Age Johnny Quick archive, it will be obvious to everyone. I'll never get away with it.

Now, we've never met before. This may sound crazy. But... what if we were to trade murders? Noone will ever suspect my cooperation in achieving a Phantom Stranger archive. And the detectives will never find anything linking me to the Johnny Quick archive, if I'm not the one who pulled the trigger.

Think about it.

The 50s Phantom Stranger series is reprinted in the early issues of the 70s series, as well as the Showcase tryout issue (#70?)

Actually I would like an Archive of THOSE 70s issues (at least the first two year's worth of stories or so, when Neal Adams was doing the covers).
I'm not sure there's enough 50s adventures for a full Archive.

It didn't work in Strangers on a Train, I doubt it'll work now.

Just please don't kill me. I really want to read a Phantom Strangers Archives. And I don't want to die.

I've recently filled up the gaps in my PS collection but couldn't possibly pass on a PHANTOM STRANGER ARCHIVES. Man, that series had some incredible covers, too. My all time fave is #33's PS/Deadman graveyard faceoff.

Well, there is ONE guy you can kill right now and you'd even get a medal for it. But you'll hve to hurry, as there are a hundred thousand competitors for that job. Unfortunately, I don't know that it will get you the desired Archive.

I guess that whomever does manage this should get the Archive of their choice. It'd be a big selling point.

If you keep saying things like that about the former Governor of Texas, the Secret Service is gonna come looking for you.

I have nothing but respect for Ann Richards!

I was attending the Portland/Spokane playoff hockey game tonight, and was driven nuts but the play of one of our defensemen (defencemen, for the Canadian readers). I was thinking, "How can one guy continue to make so many bad decisions?" Then I recalled our present occupant of the White House, and granted the D-man a little slack. He could do worse.

BTW, Portland won, 3-1. We're up 2 games to none, best of seven.

Phantom Stranger is wonderful stuff. The archive should begin with the 50s stuff, reprint the Showcase cover and any new text material, and continue into the 70s series reprinting all new material and covers. I love the Aparo contents and Adams covers the most. A truly unique series, and not just a DC Doctor Strange. Through in the B & B team-ups and covers too...

"Through in the B & B team-ups and covers too..." should read: Throw in the B & B team-ups and covers too...

Sorry.

The subtle jabs can be overlooked, although I do hope we can keep personal politics to a minimum here.

I've appreciated your insights into D.C.'s past, but I fail to see any humor in remarks like these. (end of soapbox)

If we can't digress into politics without offending the sensitive among us, can we at least digress into sports? I have to point out to N.I. that the mighty Spokane Chiefs are just lulling Portland into complacency before their inevitable come-from-behind victory. I'm not really a hockey fan, but hey, I've got to stick up for my home team (or at least a team within about 30 miles of the wilderness I call home).

And kjames, lighten up, my friend! Jokes at the President's expense come with the territory. I'm sure Bush can take it. Heck, I'm sure he wouldn't even understand it! He'd just be tickled by the cute little smiley face James used!

And, I may not kill for a Phantom Stranger Archive, but I'd definitely buy one!

Owen's got the right map there for Phantom Stranger, I think. You'd definitely want to start with the earliest stuff and go from there. The whole series is only 6 volumes on Owen's map, so it's relatively short. And I'd be tempted to chop off that Volume 6 as being too recent (post-Crisis). Still, even for newer material, it would be nice to have this stuff all collected into one volume instead of spread out over multiple individual comics.

By the time they'd get around to publishing vol.6, the material wouldn't be so recent.

Marty, while we may disagree about the outcome of the Portland/Spokane playoff, I think we can both agree that Seattle is on the Axis of Evil.

Back to topic: Phantom Stranger would be a nice out-of-left-field choice, just for DC to show everyone that they are through with playing it safe and predicatable. The Stranger bridges that gap between super-heroics and occult/mystery/horror, sorta like Blackhawk bridges super and war. It;s a nice way to test the market without being reckless.

While an Archive of 1950s material would be of mild interest to me, I'm really only looking forward to seeing the early 1970s Wein/Aparo run collected. I think that's the only time that the feature, and the character, really worked. I'd prefer to see that brief string of stories, the real high water mark for an inherently self-limiting character (as much as I love him), collected in a trade. While not exactly on par with Wolfman/Colan's Tomb of Dracula at Marvel, or even Wein/Wrightson's Swamp Thing, it was one of DC's best mystery/horror titles of the era.

In order to round out the volume (and provide context for PS #26) I'd also include the Kaluta-drawn Spawn of Frankenstein back-ups.

Cole

Wow!

I didn't think anyone else would be interested in this archive, so I didn't bother to check. Glad to see I was wrong.

Keep on posting. Not that anyone at DC ever looks here, but it's great to hear from like minded folks.
