Except it's missing that Deadman/PS one-shot from the late 1970s, in DC Super-Stars #18. It featured Tala and Tanarak, and was written by Pasko and Conway with art by Tanghal and Giordano. At 34 pages plus cover (by Aparo) how would this affect the page counts?

Also, I think it's very awkward to break the PS Archives between PS #24 and #25. The series took a whole new direction, (and unfortunately, took on vastly inferior creative teams) after #26, Aparo's last issue. #26 wraps up a storyline that had been running in the Spawn of Frankenstien back-up for months, in a big blow-out cross-over with the Stranger himself. If there were any way to put the break between #26 and #27, it would make a lot more sense.

Yeah, one thing I always worry about with mapping is collecting all of those odd little one shot appearances. I'm a completist, so I want them all, but it's awfully tough to remember everything out there. I just hope DC's paying somebody to research all that stuff before an Archive's put together.

I've thought that a Phantom Stranger Archive might be more likely than you would first think -- there really aren't that many SA titles left to launch -- but I can anticipate a problem along the lines of what Coleo argued. I'm sure many would rather see the '70s stuff they fondly remember. As a big Aparo fan myself, I appreciate that viewpoint. However, it seems foolish to pass up the '50s stuff when there's only one volume of it. It's not like Green Arrow or Aquaman where the earlier stuff is very lengthy. The same issue appears with some of the Charlton stuff -- many would like to see just Ditko, say, but I'd like to see Blue Beetle Archives starting with the first incarnation of the character and running from there. But the debate's tougher with long-running characters -- with the Stranger, I say just give us our first '50s volume and launch right into the '70s with volume 2. Perhaps the two volumes could be solicited together, a la Challengers, for the broadest possible appeal.

The subtle jabs can be overlooked, although I do hope we can keep personal politics to a minimum here.

I've appreciated your insights into D.C.'s past, but I fail to see any humor in remarks like these. (end of soapbox)

Thanks for the kind words, kjames.

I didn't think it was particularly subtle myself, but neither did I think it was particularly partisan (though my personal views certainly are). Sorry you didn't think it was funny. My point was that every glass can be looked at through either end, and Saddam Hussein, loathesome as he surely is, is not the only person involved in the current mess who is (rightly from many points of view) hated by millions of people. We Americans in particular tend to forget that our point of view is not the only legitimate one.
I agree that the DC boards aren't the place for extended discussions of politics or other matters of social controversy (Damn, I miss the Warren Ellis Forum!), but an occasional jab, especially a good-natured one, is no more out of place than a remark about sports or food or TV or the weather, it seems to me, as long as everyone keeps their cool.
I'll step off the soap box now, too.

I'd be absolutely delighted to have a nice run of Phantom Stranger Archives on my shelf. I think it's one of DC's overlooked gems of the '70s.

Well, there is ONE guy you can kill right now and you'd even get a medal for it. But you'll hve to hurry, as there are a hundred thousand competitors for that job. Unfortunately, I don't know that it will get you the desired Archive.

You mean George W. Bush I suppose.
I can't offer anyone a DC Archive but I've got a pile of Marvel Masterworks I'd donate for the purpose.

Sh*t I came across the original poster and immediately logged my response without reading on to see someone else beat me to the joke. Darn.
Guess there's a moral somewhere there...

OK, for the record, my joke about "one guy you can kill" had Saddam Hussein as the target. The sooner this particular nasty bastard has his head on a pike, the faster this ill-conceived enterprise can be wrapped up. Then we can get back to what should be our real focus: eliminating militant terrorism that has the U.S. as its target. Something which Iraq seems to have little connection.

End of political diatribe.

Thanks, Cole. I made the changes you suggested:

He is indeed one of the nastiest dictators in recent memory, and I wish him nothing but ill, hopefully at the hands of his own people.
Bush in no way compares to him in sadism, lawlessness, and general unsavoriness. No argument there.
It is, however, possible to argue (and I want to make it very clear that I am NOT advancing such an argument here and now--only pointing out that a sizable portion of the world's population would at this moment accept it) that Bush and the United States are a greater threat to peace and international stability than are Saddam Hussein and Iraq.
And I think that's a shame.

Saddan Hussein is undeniably scum but George Bush has proven he's no p****cat and unfortunately he is probably the most powerful puppet in the world today. A lot of potential for abuse there. It frightens the hell out of me.

Obviously as a big fan of Jim Aparo, I would love to see the Wein/Aparo PS collected. I would also love to see the SA Stranger archived. He was always one of my favorite supernatual heroes!

John Ashcroft is scarier than anything you'll find in a comic book. That's all I know.

Aparo was a favorite of mine from his earliest work on Thane of Bagarth for Charlton. Grandenetti and Adams did nice work on Phantom Stranger, but Aparo was the one who kept it going for years at a very high artistic level.

Owen, is that link to a website which contains all your maps, he asked hopefully?

If so, can you give us a link to its home page?
I tried reaching www.geocities.com/owdarcy, but had no luck.

I know I'm in the minority but couldn't we just opt for one or two volumes with the Adams and Aparo stuff.

Come on, be honest, that all we really want the rest is just for anal completists.

Seven volumes sounds daunting. In fact, I was surprised that there was actually that much material. I want the 50's stuff because I've never read it, and being a big fan of The Stranger, I'm very curious to see the character evolve. I'm sucker for the brotherless one. If DC puts out one book, I'll buy it. If they put out 7, I'll buy them as well. I just hope DC gets around to this character sometime during my life.

LOL!!!

How true! The whole Bush/Chaney Regime every day looks a little more like the Injustice Society, with Ashcroft being equivelant to Vandal Savage, I'd say.

If I had the ability to drop real people into comic book realities, I'd unhesitatingly precipitate Ashcroft into one of the more violent issues of Preacher.

I've been slowly working on a website. All I've done so far is post a few maps. The site doesn't have a home page yet.
