I'm optimistic that we might see some of these lower ranking JSA members get Archives within a handful of years. If Black Canary didn't already have an Archive, I'm sure she'd be at about the bottom of everyone's list, both in terms of desirability and expected likelihood. Yet her Archive exists, apparently did OK in terms of sales, and has had many readers comment on how surprised they were to enjoy it as much as they did. Based on this precedent, I have hopes that even characters like GA Atom and Johnny Thunder would perform respectably sales-wise and would provide entertaining reading.

In fact, when we talk about DC trying out lesser-known characters to stretch the boundaries of the Archive program, I think some of these lesser JSA characters are perfect for that experiment to continue in the path of Black Canary. Bring on Dr. Mid-Nite, Hourman, etc. and maybe someday we'll get to stuff like Midnight or -- dare I say it? -- the Red Bee! Honestly, I'd like to see DC really go out there and give us an Ibis Archive or something like that, but I think these JSA characters are the most realistic way to test the waters for obscure GA strips, especially those not attached to major creators.

I'm amazed that I'm the only one who put Mr. Terrific dead last. I suspect that a lot of people know they don't like Atom and Johnny Thunder because thev'e seen examples. Will these people feel the same way once they see a Mr. Terrific tale?

Anyway, the score so far is almost exactly as it was near the end of page 1. Hawkman briefly took the lead, but he's back in second. Wildcat has surpassed Scribbly, but basically all of the scores are just about the same.

4. Wildcat
5. Hourman
6. Red Tornado
7. Johnny Thunder
8. Dr. Mid-Nite
9. The Atom
10.Mr. Terrific

Well, here's my list, in order of preference. But, I made a distinction between those first three and the following candidates. Because, I'm very anxious for those first three, and then there's a big drop in my interest level for the other JSA members, in which I'd be much more interested in some non-JSA items like Doll Man, Newsboy Legion, Marvel Family, Robin, Ibis, The Ray, Comic Cavalcade, Strange Adventures, and perhaps others. Not that I wouldn't purchase volumes for the remaining 7 JSA-er's. I'd probably buy them in a heartbeat. But, I'd much rather see some of that other material ahead of them.

Okay--I've gotta ask: what is the attraction of Mr.Terrific?

Here's an obscure character with a really bad costume and what sems to me a weak premise, who never had more than barely adequate art, and he's falling at the middle of a lot of folks' lists.
I'm a sucker for old obscure superheroes--have been since the '50s, for pete's sake--but this guy never stirred my interest, even the first time I saw him in 1959. The only place I can recall him being intriguing was in the JSA Returns event of 1999, and James Robinson can make any character seem interesting; in fact, that struck me at the time as proof of Robinson's amazing talent in that area--that he made Mr.Terrific seem, however briefly, interesting.

Or is it just a horrible fascination with a guy who has Fair Play written on his stomach in a proscenium arch with curtains and who wears little black shoes?

I have to ask, what is the attraction of Scribbly/Red Tornado?
This rarely seems to fall below mid-range on most people's list here. I have well over a thousand mainly pre-1976 DC comics, and cannot ever recall reading one of these stories.

Lee,

I put Scribbly and the Red Tornado first on my list because I have read exactly 8 stories, and desperately want to read the rest! They have that rare combination of good art, good story telling, and laughs every panel. In my opinion, it's right up there with Barks' Ducks, Wolverton's Powerhouse Pepper, or Cole's Plastic Man. Of ALL of DC's work that has not yet been archived, Scribbly & Red Tornado is the one I would most like to see.

For a sampling of Scribbly and the Red Tornado, hunt down a copy of The Smithsonian Book of Comic-Book Comics. It reprints 5 consecutive stories from All-American Comics #20-24. Also, The Greatest Golden Age Stories Ever Told reprints a Scribbly story (pre-Red Tornado) from All-American Comics #6.

I know I said I've read 8 stories, and those reprints I just mentioned make 6. The other 2? I have a couple of real beat up copies of All-American Comics #'s 44 and 46!

I think there are four things going on with Mr. T:

First, and most importantly, as vze2 said, it's because to many readers, Mr. Terrific is an unknown quantity. My exposure to Johnny Thunder and the Atom through the All-Star Archives makes me actively wary of those strips--while the only Mr. Terrific tale I've ever seen is in reprints of Sensation #1; it's mediocre but not enough to judge the strip by.

Second, there is a minor mystique attached to the character because of his death in JLA, and the way it took DC 20 years to tie up the story.

Third, Johns and Goyer have turned Ostrander's new Mr. Terrific into an appealing, if woefully underdeveloped character in the new JSA, and they had a nice guest shot by the original a few months ago. Maybe that has something to do with it as well. I suspect Mr. T has been written better in his two or three appearances over the last few years than he was in his entire golden age career.

Fourth, maybe people just pity the fool.

To be honest, Atom, Johnny and Mr. Terrific are in a three-way-tie at the bottom for me. Perhaps I should have listed them that way.

I think support for Mayer is definitely warranted based on the work I've seen, like in the Smithsonian book. But I also think it's a separate campaign, a side issue from JSA rankings. Leaving out Scribbly, it seems that almost everyone here wants Hawkman, Dr. Fate, and Sandman (who all also happen to be the biggest guns of the team as yet unarchived) first--followed closely by Hourman. The consistency of opinion is really something.

I Don't thin you can read too much into where we place any character past the top two or three. Like most people, I'm working from the handful of GA stories I've seen reprinted in these preferences, so a lot is based on more recent exposure to the characters ('recent' being a relative term; I read my first JLA/JSA story 35 years ago.) I like Wildcat as a character better than Mr Terrific or the Atom, so i'm going to vote for a Wildcat Archive over and above the others. But I'm exactly as likely to buy a GA Atom Archive (bottom of my list) as I am a Sandman Archive (top). That's 100 per cent likely, barring any unforeseen downturn in my economic circumstances. Almost none of these characters represent the best as-yet-unarchived GA material, but they're all likely to appear before such gems as the The Ray, Ibis and Robotman.

You've got me there. I'm in exactly the same position, which makes, as has been discussed here before, our opinions of limited interest to DC since they know we're almost a captive audience as far as Golden and Silver Age material is concerned. We have to wow 'em with sheer force of reason, I guess...

Oh, I think we'll see The Ray and a fair number of his mid-range Golden Age brethren before we ever get The Atom, Johnny Thunder and Mr.Terrific. Quality of material may not be the only or even the largest criterion in deciding who gets archived, but it certainly counts for something.

How one character gets chosen over another for the archive treatment is yetanother debate we've had on these boards before, James, and i still think any JSA character has better odds of getting an archive, including Johnny and Mr T, than a character that has no exposure in or link to a current book. The (current) Ray needs a few JSA appearances to bump up his dad's prospects for an archive.

Okay, I'll admit to morbid curiosity. Also, the only ones I'm really excited about are Scribbly, Dr. Fate and Sandman. The order the rest fall in doesn't matter.

One of the first comics I remember reading was JLA #101, the second part of the magnificent JLA/JSA cross-over featuring the Seven Soldiers of Victory. Mr. Terrific has a bit part, as do E-II Robin (in the grey and yellow outfit) and Diana Prince Wonder Woman (white pantsuit version.) All three have held a special fascination for me ever since.

Now, Johnny Thunder? That, I don't get.

When the annual JLA/JSA team-up came around, I would get pissed if I saw Johnny Thunder in the roll call. (Later, when the team-ups became the Power Girl-Huntress Show, I realized the irony.)
