The GCD has been down for a couple of days, and is preventing me from finishing this right now, so I thought I'd post what I've done, and post the rest when I get it done. IP: Logged |

quote: Most of the "Write Your Own Comic" pages did not feature Sugar & Spike. I'm not sure they would be used in a S&S Archives any more than Super Turtle fillers would be used in a Silver Age Superman Archive. They were by Mayer; however, so there is that justification. When finishing this Archive map, remember the "new" issue #99 plus the "new" stories in some of the DC digests. These were originally published overseas. There are also some 100+ other pages of unpublished (at least in the US) S&S stories floating around. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the scoop on the "Write Your Own Page" feature. The GCD doesn't list who is featured on any of these pages, and I know I've seen some with S&S, so I decided to include them all. If DC needs to snip a few pages to get the page count down, these are the likeliest candidates. The GCD lists the later material. Assuming it is complete and accurate, it'll get in the map. Great job with the map. I'm been collecting S&S since around 1985, and am a little embarassed that the first volume that contains a comic I actually own is V.4. Naturally, some of the individual stories are familiar to me from the DC Digest issues and last year's facimile. I would gladly pay $200 to fill the gap between issue 1 and 33. If this ever takes off can we have a Three Mousketeers done in one? At lest I have the 70's reprint series of that stuff.. Patrick "no Scribbly, Scooter, S&S, or Red Tornado, and he wants the damn MICE??" Joseph

I'm willing to map the various humor features, if I can find the info. I've done some searchs, and the info is scarce. I said a while back, you can find anything about super-heroes on the net. If I i tried, I'll bet I could find an analysis of the number of freckles Jimmy Olsen has, which artists gave him more than average, how much they varied from panel to panel, and the distribution pattern through time. But try to find something on Funny Folks? Jeez, you'd swear it was CIA classified or something. IP: Logged |

You may use any and all posts I make. I started the S&S map since I noticed neither of you had made one yet. If I can find adequate info for other humor strips, I'll make maps of those, too. Unless someone beats me to it. I tried following your format, Owen. If there's something I'm missing or if I'm doing something that doesn't make it easy for you to copy and paste the material, let me know, and I'll adjust. IP: Logged |

Why do you waste your time on things like this? I don't think Sugar and Spike will ever be archived. They won't even give them a facsimilie editon. The reprint of #1 was fun, but neither it, nor the millennium editon sold well. The merits of the strip are debateable, not enough people want it or any of the Sheldon Mayer stuff. I've enjoyed some of the digests, but that must not have done well either. Personally, I enjoyed Mayer's funny animal stuff more. Sugar and Spike was "Dennis the Menace", there were just two menaces, fun but not archive-worthy. I honestly think the Red Bee will get an archive, or even a tradepaperback before Sugar and Spike get one. Reklen IP: Logged |

quote: You mean you haven't heard DC is going to start the Sheldon Mayer Library, beginning with Scribbly and The Red Tornado and continuing with Sugar & Spike to replace The Spirit Archives in 2008? Same 3 volumes a year like The Spirit Archives. Just kidding! But a guy can dream, can't he? Kevin IP: Logged |

Some stuff I doubt we ever see in the archive format but its interesting all the same seeing maps. A few questions though do DC find some of these maps of charactors useful as well as us and who at DC does the research on compiling appearances that is used for things like the Archives? IP: Logged |

quote: There are four or five issues of Funny Folks in the Grand Comics Data Base. I know because I put them there. More on the way. 3 issues of the funny animal Comic Cavalcade are done. A bunch of Animal Antics, one Funny Stuff (the all-Mayer issue) and the complete run of All-Funny. I have a whole bunch of Fox and Crow and Real Screen to put in, but my fingers get tired..... And then it's down for days and I can't work on it. Three Mouseketeers are coming too. I just wish I had some help! IP: Logged |

Thanks, NI, for your support. Now, who would be the best person at DC to bribe--I mean persuade--in order to see this come about? Mr. Greenberger? Mr. Crain? Mr. Levitz? Kevin IP: Logged |

quote: Interesting question. I think that discussing series of interest on this board has the potential to attract support to a proposed series. Discussions on this board shaped my opinions to the point that Brave and the Bold #1-24 are now among the archives I would most like to see.
quote: I hope you're right. The archive format isn't appropriate for DC's humor series. I would much rather see them in an affordable format that might sell outside the hardcore fan circles. IP: Logged |

Thanks, NI. I would so love to see these 13 volumes on my bookcase - Archives or Trade Paperbacks! Maybe - Twomorrows, for example, will do a biography of Sheldon Mayer one day to sit on the bookcase next to these volumes, and of course, Scribbly and the Red Tornado. IP: Logged |

quote: Wayne, a wonderful thought, truly. I've asked David Spurlock over at Vanguard Productions why he doesn't do a good Mayer book like their Swan tome, and he said he wasn't sure he could sell enough to make it worthwhile. I thought about this and realize that Mayer doesn't have the recognition factor others have but I think its a matter of education; once they know, they will understand. TwoMorrows could probably do a great Shelly book, like their upcoming Murphy Anderson retrospective. Jim IP: Logged |
