Owen and I have been talking the last few days, and have decided, since the content of our respective sites is so much alike and focused toward the same goal, to work together and make one joint site! The start of that site is up now and should grow pretty quickly in the coming weeks and months. This new venture focuses not just on maps of future archives, but also published volumes, and current Archive and Masterworks news and schedules. Your one-stop archives site!

This is a brand new site with a distinctive look from either of our solo endeavors. I currently only have two map pages up, Shazam and Haunted Tank, to give a sample of what they will look like, but more should be coming in relatively short order. (I do need to do some updates on my Golden Years site in the next week or so, but updates to this site will speed up soon afterwards.) In the meantime, you can still go to either Owen’s site, or my own, for maps. With such a large undertaking, we’re going to need a little bit of help. Please visit our “Help Us!” page to see what we’re requesting.

Finally, we have everything pretty much set up except one thing, the site’s name. Currently we’re under the working title of “The Archives,” but we’ve decided to let you, the archive board readers, choose the final name! We’re trying to avoid anything that limits the content of the site too much like “The Future Archives Site” or “The Archives Maps Home Page.” (Not that either of those have much flare to them anyway...) Post your suggestions here and we’ll choose the one we like best!

That's awesome! Congratulations to both of you.

I might be able to squeeze some time out for story synopses or maybe a mock-up or two. When you have the archive-like font, drop a post into the mb so we know it's available. That's been one of the main things preventing me from fooling around with it.

Good luck with the joint site. It looks great!

I'd like to volunteer for the Legion synopses, unless Steve or Owen prefer to do those themselves.

If you two haven't done so already, will you be adding a list of assigned tasks so as to avoid duplicate effort?

A name eh?

Well one staple of the first era of comics was the ol lost city/city of the future - a place where wonders could be found.

I don't know what you had planned for page decor, but how about graphics of such old pulp/comic type lost cities - theres a recent issue of Thunderbolts with Zemo looking out on such a city - and the name Archivia - a store house of treasures and wonder - which the maps are to us officianados.

We haven't made any formal list between ourselves, but generally, Owen is handling the maps and I'm doing site design, images, and maintenance. That's not to say I'll never do any of the mapping work, or he'll never do any of the site work. In fact, I'll likely flesh out some of my Golden Age maps after I get more of the site up, and I'm working to get the information about published volumes up now.

Speaking of the published volumes, I haven't found out what Owen has yet, but I only have 26 of the 77 DCU volumes, and Spirit and Mad vol.1. I could use some help getting information on the volumes I don't have yet. What I need for each volume is:

1)The date of the first printing

2)Number of pages in the book

3)ISBN #

4)Volume highlights (optional, but preferred)

5)Listings of each story in the book with the following information (almost all of it will come from the table of contents): book name, number, and date, story title, number of pages per story, and creator credits (writer, artist(s), and if there is a reprinted cover, cover artist(s)). I know it sounds like a lot, but it really is pretty easy information to gather. (*Synopsis is another field, but it is optional.)

Here are the 26 I have: Action 1-2, All-Star 1-4, Batman 1-2, Dynamic Duo 1, Batman in WFC 1, Enemy Ace 1, GA Flash 1, GA Green Lantern 1, JLA 1, Legion 1, Plastic Man 1-2, Shazam! 1-3, GA Spectre 1, GA Starman 1, and Superman 1-3. I also know that I’ll be buying the following in the next few months: Action 3, JLA 2, and Superman 4-6.

As for your volunteering to do the Legion synopses outpost, I'll be sure to put you down for it! The synopsis field was the last thing I planned to fill in after we got most of the site up. Any help we can get with that (or anything for that matter) is much appreciated!!!

Great idea, guys.
I have no technical skills whatever to offer, but I do own all the archives, DCU and other, in first printings, so I can supply any info you need there, and I'm a moderately good descriptive writer if there's anything else I could help with.

Am I the only one who gets a generic "FortuneCity web hosting - domain names" graphic for EVERY jpeg or gif? It's not just this site, but EVERY Fortune City site I visit.

Great site, guys. I have only one complaint, and you can both probably guess what it is. None of the three sites contain a Golden Age Green Lantern map. To be honest, with all the other maps there, I figured at least one of the sites would have it. But other than that, I give it a thumbs up!

Gary "I know Steve mapped this at one time, so I figure it wouldn't be too hard to add it to one or all of the sites" O.

Oh, and these are the actual ship dates, not the scheduled dates.

I have all the old Direct Currents fliers, so I can probably look up the scheduled dates for Superman vol. 1-4, Batman vol. 1, and Dark Knight vol. 2.

Superman vol. 1 = Oct 1989
Superman vol. 2 = Oct 1990
Superman vol. 3 = Sep 1991
Superman vol. 4 = May 10, 1994
Batman vol. 1 = June 1990

Steve, do you want info for the later printings? There have been noteworthy changes with some printings, making them effectively "second editions".

All-Star V1, Dark Knight V1, Flash V1, Legion V6, Legion V10 are all known to have changed after the first printing. That's just off the top of my head. There may be subtle changes for many others, such as updating the bios with death info for creators who passed after the first printing.

Cool.
To avoid duplication of effort with others, why don't I start on Silver Age volumes, beginning with "A"--I'll try to get Aquaman and Atom to you tonight. Don't know how much in the way of Synopses I'll do, but the rest is no problem.

Great site, guys!

One other piece of information I'd like to see for each volume (both the first AND later printings, if possible): the cover prices - both US and Canadian. The US cover price remains constant for most books, but the Canadian cover price tends to rise and fall with fluctuations in the exchange rate, and can be a quick indicator of whether or not the shrink-wrapped book you're holding in your hands is a first printing or not.

Mike's Amazing World Of DC Comics, located at http://dcindexes.com/ has a spreadsheet listing everything DC has ever published, including (naturally) all of the Archives. It lists shipping dates for everything for the last few decades. Here are the dates he gives for those early volumes:

10/24/89 THE SUPERMAN ARCHIVES vol. 1

06/5/90 THE BATMAN ARCHIVES vol. 1
10/2/90 THE SUPERMAN ARCHIVES vol. 2

09/24/91 THE SUPERMAN ARCHIVES vol. 3

Thanks for the list outpost! (And to those who added to it!) That was something I was wanting to put up on the site at some point, but you beat me to even asking for it!

On a related note, I'd also like to get as many of the pre-order numbers as I can. It's information that frequently comes up here, and I think it would be a good idea to keep all of this in one spot for everyone to access when needed. I guess I need to create another page, an Archives FAQ... Anything else I need to put on it? (Besides why DC won't make essentials that is. )

To everyone who has volunteered help, we really appreciate it! Tomorrow I'll make a list of who has volunteered to do what, not so I can come to your house and beat you up if you don't follow through, but to keep track of it all! To be honest, I expected good response to the site, and a slow trickle of assistance, but we have had a HUGE response (151 visitors to the site so far), and more offers of help than I could have dreamed of! Thank you all!

Thanks for filling in the blanks, Jim. I believe that Mike Violes' list was for scheduled dates, not actual ship dates, but I'll have to double-check that with him. Either way, this gives us a complete list of dates to start from.

Outpost2 - your list of shipping dates for archives shows what one suspected - the period 1995-97 was an EXTREMELY slow one for archives.
One might have thought at the time DC's archive program was heading for imminent extinction.

Don't forget Tomahawk guys!

You both did a great job on a partial mapping.

And he was around for a long, long time!!

If I had any computer skill at all I'd send a mock up.

Well, we are all ruining our eyes with all that small type in those tiny word balloons. We are always seeking the pefect light to read in so as not to strain our aging eyes, and I am personally very soon going for my third pair of bifocals since I discoverd I needed them. Put all that together and a good name for it might be: site_for_sore_eyes. com

Actually Archivia was suggested - that isn't half bad.
