Is this the same Phatom Lady who was Ted Knight's cousin? Wasn't Police Comics non-DC (Quality, right?) I guess I'm not that up on GA history, but how was Ted Knight's cousin (Sandra Knight, right?) created by a different company from Ted himself? Chris IP: Logged |

quote: It's supposed to be the same character (although a very different treatment of that character). If DC now owns the character, wouldn't DC own all the published stories featuring that character, regardless of publisher? (Someone who actually knows something about copyright law will probably correct me on this.) She also had a third publisher. The 4-issue series from 1954-5, numbered 5, 2, 3 and 4, was published by Ajax/Farrell. I wonder who owned the character when DC finally bought her. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the list. I already had some of these, thanks to the Fox Phantom Lady checklist included in AC's GOLDEN AGE GREATS #2 / 1994. It appears there's 2 stories on that list not included above: WONDER BOY #17 / May'55 -- "The Man The Kremlin Applauded" WONDER BOY #18 / Jul'55 -- "Success Is No Accident" These were listed as just before and after the Ajax PHANTOM LADY #4. I've lost the e-mail he sent me, but Bill Black was trying to explain how the Quality & Fox PHANTOM LADYs diverged in publishing history & ownership. (I wish I still had that e-mail, I'd run it here.) Bill Black's Paragon Publications decided to revive PHANTOM LADY in 1972, and did 10 stories with her over the following years, until DC ordered him to stop! Beginning with BILL BLACK'S FUN COMICS #4 / 1983 (officially the 1st AC Comic), she became NIGHTVEIL and has made far more appearances than either the Quality version of PG has at DC or the newer character who debuted in ACTION COMICS WEEKLY and has been seen since in STARMAN. According to the most recent info I have, NIGHTVEIL has appeared in NIGHTVEIL # 1-7, SENTINELS OF JUSTICE # 1-6, ARMAGEDDON FACTOR # 1-3, NIGHTVEIL SPECIAL # 1, VENTURE # 3, FEMFORCE SPECIAL # 1, FEMFORCE # 1-80 (current), NIGHTVEIL’S CAULDRON OF HORROR # 1-3, FEMFORCE: HOUSE OF HORROR, FEMFORCE: NIGHT OF THE DEMON, UNTOLD ORIGIN OF FEMFORCE, BLUE BULLETEEER # 1, AC ANNUAL # 1, GOOD GIRL ART QUARTERTLY # 1-18 (current) Between AC and Verotik (who did a rather shabby COLOR collection of the Fox PG in '94) I've read a number of the Fox stories. What I really wish is that SOMEBODY would do them properly. I'd welcome a DC Archive! IP: Logged |

I'm SURE this was one of those "postal regulation" deals where a publisher changed an existing title rather than start a new one to eliminate permit hassles... What Quality title "disappeared" after 12 issues so that PHANTOM LADY #13 could "debut"? IP: Logged |

quote: The GCD doesn't have information about the mid '50s Wonder Boy series. I found it in Overstreet, but I wasn't sure if those were Phantom Lady stories or Wonder Boy stories with guest appearances by Phantom Lady. Do you have more information about those stories, such as page counts?
quote: It probably continued from another Fox series, but I don't know which. It continued as My Love Secret #24-30 (June '49 - June '50), which in turn continued as Animal Crackers #31 (July '50). IP: Logged |

You know, I have the DC Millennium Edition of POLICE COMICS #1. Apart from Platic Man, I think Phantom Lady is probably the only other character in there that really interests me. Question: Were PG's appearances in the Spider Widow series in FEATURE COMICS # 69-71 / Jul-Sep'43 a 5 or 6-part story? I know things like that were pretty rare in those days, but not unheard of (Sub-Mariner & The Human Torch certainly set a precedent). What was the deal with Ajax's debut issue? Did some title run 4 issues and get renamed-- and then re-numbered the following issue, or was Ajax's PG #5 (#1) really a #1 but they didn't like putting a #1 on the cover? According to the AC list, "Television Spies" in the Ajax PG #3 / Apr'55 was a re-do of the story from ALL-TOP #10 / Mar'48 (even the same title) with new art. Ajax published 10 PG stories (not counting the "True Crime" ones PG narrated). There was, apparently, an unpublished 11th story, which Bill Black has the original art to and plans to publish at some point (if he hasn't already)! And while I'm on it, here's the Paragon PG stories: PHANTOM LADY #1 / 1972 -- "Dweller In The Darkness" CAPTAIN PARAGON #1 / 1972 -- "Dweller In The Darkness" (same story or 2-parter, I wonder?) FEM FANTASTIQUE #2 / 1975 -- "Carnage On Campus" (part of "Capricorn Chronicles"-- whatever that is) BIZARRE THRILS #1 / 1977 -- "Battle Beyond Reality" FEM FANTASTIQUE #3 / 1979 -- "Red Dominion" (Capricorn Chronicles) FOX PHANTOM LADY INDEX / 1979 -- "Wild Eyes" (Bill Black reworking a non-PG story with art by Matt Baker) FEMZINE #1 / 1981 -- "The All Girl Squad" (FEMFORCE prototype) Bill Black's FUN COMICS #1 / 1981 -- "Love Death" Bill Black's FUN COMICS #3 / 1982 -- "Coming Of Ero" Bill Black's FUN COMICS #4 / 1983 -- "Nightfall" (1st AC Comic / 1st NIGHTVEIL) Artist MATT BAKER appears to have illustrated all of the Fox PG stories from 1947-48, with the exception of the one in ALL-TOP #15, which was done by "ALTON". And no PG set should be without the '94 Verotik reprint cover done by ADAM HUGHES!!! (If those stories ever got reprinted properly-- complete, in chronological sequence, and with a PROPER coloring job) I'd want to insist that Hughes piece be included, either as a pin-up or as the cover for one of the Archive volumes! It's just too good to pass up. Oh, and for anyone who hasn't seen it-- just 6 months ago (Aug'02) DC Direct put out a PG Action Figure! WOW!!! Couldn't pass THAT one up! IP: Logged |

Sorry, I said PG when I meant PL!!! (Wrong "action figure"-- heehee) "Do you have more information about those stories, such as page counts?" Sorry, the AC list didn't include any page counts. I just used the list you ran to add page counts to MY list! (Thanks again.) IP: Logged |

Roy Thomas made Ted & Sandra cousins in 1984. ------------------ Michael IP: Logged |

"Just in case it wasn't clear from the above responses, Sandra Knight wasn't Ted Knight's cousin in the Golden Age. As far as I know, the connection wasn't made until the late 1980s. In any case, I don't think that the connection was ever really exploited until James Robinson's Starman." This "retcon" turned up in the Stern-Lyle STARMAN series, right? (Which made it seem natural when the new PL turned up in the Robinson STARMAN series some years later.) Anybody with too much time on their hands wanna dig out WHICH issues of each series the new PL has appeared in since her debut in ACW? (Oooh, did I LOVE that Chuck Austen art!!!) IP: Logged |

"Roy Thomas made Ted & Sandra cousins in 1984." OHH, that must have been in ALL-STAR SQUADRON!! I forgot about those. (This is becoming a really interactive Board, isn't it?) IP: Logged |

quote: My information for those stories comes from the GCD, which doesn't say if they're separate stories or a single multi-part story.
quote: Probably something like that.
quote: So the 4-issue Ajax series also had "true crime" stories narrated by PG? The GCD doesn't have complete information for that series. Only the stories starring PG are given titles and page counts. (I'd at least like to have page counts for the other stories so that I can finally do this map properly.) IP: Logged |

Feature Comics #69 (untitled) (Phantom Lady crossover in Spider Widow story.) Police Comics #21 "Phantom Lady Vs. the Spider Widow" Feature Comics #70 (untitled) (Phantom Lady crossover in Spider Widow story.) Police Comics #22 "Submarine Sabotage" Feature Comics #71 "Peace -- It's Wonderful" (Phantom Lady crossover in Spider Widow story.) Now just looking at the first 3 on this list, it sure seems like it was a continued story bouncing between 2 different books, doesn't it? As for the number of Ajax PL stories, I'm guessing that Bill Black is just enough of a PL & Golden Age fanatic to have that kind of info correct. His list did NOT include any of the "True Crime" stories (I also added those from your list) and there were several from the Ajax run that he didn't list as well. IP: Logged |

I'd put money down for some Phantom Lady archives... definitely. Also, put me down for The Golden Age Ray Archives once they figure out how to successfully reprint Lou Fine's work! ------------------ IP: Logged |

This is quite a coincidence, but just last week I read Trina Robbins' THE GREAT WOMEN SUPERHEROES. PL is one of the 4 women on the cover (the Fox version) and there's several pages of Matt Baker art included-- but only one small panel of the Quality PL. Spider Widow is also mentioned in the book (imagine my running across her TWICE in such a short space of time), but only very briefly, and there's only one tiny panel, a close-up of her from the shoulders-up. Spider Widow was unusual in that she had a male sidekick, named The Raven. (Unfortunately, no mention of the SW-PL crossover.) IP: Logged |

"...once they figure out how to successfully reprint Lou Fine's work!" It would be a LOT easier if they did the reprints BIGGER, like magazine-size, because the Golden Age comics were slightly larger than Silver Age and most since (except for some graphic novels and the like). IP: Logged |

Thank you, thank you for this map OCD!!! So did PL have the yellow costume in Police Comics and the blue/red get-up in the late 40s? I have a tpb reprint where she's wearing that latter costume... I wouldn't care to see the Police Comics covers again...we've seen 'em all in Plastic Man Archives, and she wasn't really on them prominently. IP: Logged |
