Snapper all but disappeared once O'Neil took over the writing in issue 66, and he finally wrote him out entirely in issue 77, (which will appear in volume 9), with his "betrayal" of their secret HQ to the Joker.

Ooh! Ooh! I know this one! I know this one!

Snapper betrayed the JLA because he was tricked by the Joker. If I remember correctly, there was a generation gap issue and Snapper was convinced the JLA was no longer cool (or something to that effect.) I'd read about this fabled issue for years in later issues of JLA, but once I got it, it was a wee bit of a disappointment. In context of the issues around it, it's not so bad.

Contrary to what others have said about this era of JLA (66-99), I enjoyed this era. Even when the stories were silly, we've got that wonderful Dick Dillin art. Dillin is my favorite JLA artist. I even have a couple of pages of originals on the wall (from later years, though...)

I know this material is 35 years old...but is it too late to call a spoiler alert on this stuff? I haven't read it yet.

My apologies Dylanfan for not being more sensitive to those who have not yet read the issues. Thank you for issuing the alert. The original request was mine, but I now share Dylanfan's desire for a spoiler alert.

It was reported at the Pulse last night:

We now have an official solicitation for a May 7th release date:
http://www.herorealm.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=83;t=000474

"After guiding The World’s Greatest Heroes in their adventures for nearly a decade, writer Gardner Fox and artist Mike Sekowsky were moving on — meaning some big changes were in the air, leaving new writer Dennis O’Neil and new artist Dick Dillin to take charge of the World’s Greatest Heroes! The first work of this new creative team is seen in JUSTICE LEAGUE ARCHIVES Volume 8, a 240-page hardcover reprinting JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #61-66, and 68-70 (plus the cover to #67, which was a reprint from 1967-68), which showcases this transition of creative teams. This archive also features the art of Sid Greene, George Roussos, Neal Adams, and more, as well as a cover by Sekowsky and Jerry Ordway.

Featured in this volume are: another annual team-up of the JLA/JSA (in which they face the treacherous T. O. Morrow) that also introduces the mysterious Red Tornado; the cosmic challenge of the Chaos Maker; a tale guest-starring The Creeper and Mind-Grabber Kid; the return of the crafty criminal The Key; and an adventure in which the members of the JLA go head-to-head with their own individual foes!

Plus, how can a small-time dictator challenge the JLA? And is Green Arrow really a murderer? All this and more can be found in this volume featuring a new introduction by O'Neil, plus a cover by Sekowsky, newly inked by Jerry Ordway!

JUSTICE LEAGUE ARCHIVES Volume 8 is a 240-page hardcover, arriving in comic-book stores May 7 with a cover price of $49.95 U.S."

Nothing about Wonder Woman leaving the group? I'd think that worthy of mention from a historical perspective.

The cover must have been extracted from one of the first 3 stories done by Sekowsky, but I can't place it from memory.

And one final quibble - 240 pages? Doesn't make sense.

9 stories at 23 pages apiece, plus 10 covers = 217 pages, so a normal 224-page volume seems more likely unless I'm missing something.

The Snapper story was retold during the run of the late, lamented Hourman.

Since I've never read the original story, I look forward to one day comparing the two.

I'm now nearly certain that the cover is lifted from the end of issue 66's "Divided They Fall". The heroes depicted are the same as those shown on the cover of that issue, and IIRC the Atom plays a key role in the battle with General Demmy Gog (yeah - don't ask!). I no longer have this issue so I can't verify it 100% - if anyone out there does have it, please check.

But if this is the case, then the Archive cover has been erroneously credited in the solicitation to Mike Sekowsky, when it is in fact Dick Dillin!

Dillin did the interiors in that issue while Adams did the cover.

You are correct, sir! I just checked the issue. The cover image on Vol. 8 is a modified version of the final panel of JLA 66.

I only glanced at the archive version, but it looks like a complete re-drawing. The angle is different. In the comic, you only see the back of Batman's head, but I think he's turned in profile on the archive cover. I wish I had it in front of me.

By way of preserving this thread (at least for another couple of weeks) - I believe somewhere Jerry Ordway confirmed that it was indeed a Sekowsky drawing for the cover of this volume - so apparently Sekowsky re-drew Dillin's panel from JLA 66 for some unknown reason - a house ad perhaps?
