I guess if I stuck with that analogy, my "Platinum Age" would be prior to the death of President Kennedy. I ate comics just as often as I looked at them (couldn't read myself, but I have a distinct memory of my much older brother reading Superman comics to me). I also remember crawling through the stash of comics that my sisters and brother had (haphazardly tossed inside a secret compartment between my sisters' bedroom wardrobe and our living room umbrella rack).

"pre-Golden Age" is after the death of Kennedy and during those heady days of the Beatles invasion (1964, 1965). This era belongs to Harvey--and to a lesser extent to Sugar & Spike, Fawcett's Dennis the Menace, Little Archie, various Gold Key and Dell comics, Bob Hope, and Jerry Lewis. I don't recall ever buying any of these comics--most of them were comics in the family stash, or comics I got as a reward of some kind (eg. being good at the dentist's). I suspect many of these coverless comics were brought home by Dad from the post office (on returns they only had to tear off the covers, so the rest of the comics would either be pocketed or end up in the trash).

I really do like most of DC's Archives, especially the Golden Age reprints but they sure are putting a hole in my pocket. Almost an Archive every month is too much moolah, but as long as they keep reprinting comics I'll never buy any other way in the Archives I'll keep buying them.

*Sigh* I wish I could buy Plastic Man vol.4 now, but I have vol.2 and 3 left to get. Vol.2 will be this December along with All-Star vol.4, GA Green Lantern vol.1, and GA Flash vol.1. I was contemplating THUNDER Agents vol.1, but I think I'll put that and other such volumes on hold to build up my DCU Archives. Which after next month, will number a scant 16. (Or more if I ask for one or two for Christmas...) Only 59 (plus Spirit) to go!

74.

At the annual New Year's Day sale I was saddened to see that archives were only 15 % off this year. In past years they've been 20 % off. Since I usually get 10 % off anyway, that's not much of a savings.

As such I had to adjust my original plan which was to buy six or more and opted only for five archives this time. Golden age Green Lantern v. 2 had to stay on the shelf.

With the Dynamic Duo archive coming out soon--hopefully--I'll have to do some more shifting of the books on my shelves.

I decided to concentrate on Superman.

To complete my collection of Superman archives (thusfar published) I had to get vols. 4 & 5 of the Superman archive and vol. 3 of in Action archives.

I then bought two more LSH archives in my retarded attempts to get that series. You see, when the first volume came out I didn't see the pressing need to get it--given that virtually everything in there had already been reprinted in digests (amongst other places)--and so I never really got into the Legion archives in a big way. Now I'm faced with the daunting task of getting all of them--one of the reasons that with subsequent series like The Spirit I've opted to buy the books as soon as they come out rather than get so far behind.

I had the first three volumes of Legion so I was looking for vols. 4 & 5 this time--but volume 4 was not in the store. So I ended up purchasing vols. 5 & 6.

And it's a good thing (or maybe a bad thing) that I did--since volume 6 is wonderful.

I started buying the Legion (in Adventure) around the period covered by volume 6. As soon as I turned through its pages I was overwhelmed with good feelings--stories I loved so very much contained in those pages. I suppose I have a greater affection for those issues than issues of other comics because of my sister. She accompanied me on my Saturday journey's to Mrs. Ryan's drug emporium where I would get my one or two comics for the week, but my sister rarely expressed interest in the superhero comics--except for Adventure. After I finished with an issue I would pass it over to her and she would enjoy reading about that grand group of youths, the Legion of Super-Heroes.

I would be hard pressed to choose a favourite story from volume 6, but the one where the Legionnaires are turned into tots was a great joy. You'd think I'd choose the Adult Legion or Sun-Eater stories, epic tales--but no that one with the cute little imps inspires the greatest affection.

And looking at the credits which list Jim Shooter as doing "layouts" brings before my mind's eye the image of little Jimmy doing his homemade comicbook version of each story before giving it over for Curt Swan's polished interpretation.

Soon after the stories in vol. 6, I lost interest in superhero comics for awhile and didn't really get back into the Legion until they started appearing in the Superboy comic. Now that volume 6 has excited my interest again I'm anxious to get vols. 7 & 8 to see what I missed.

So by fortune getting vol. 6 was a good thing--except that I doubt I'll be able to wait another year to get more volumes, which means spending money immediately--and that could be a bad thing.

I think that's the first time I've ever seen Jim Shooter (at any age) referred to as "little".

85 (assuming you include Spirit, Tor and Mad in the Archive Line). The only ones I'm missing are Plastic Man 4 and Spirit 9, but I'm sure I'll pick them up soon. My girlfriend thinks I'm a nut

excellent choices. LEGION is by far my favorite archive series. i hope you don't get disappointed when you finally do get 4. a lot of people don't think it's the best book. even kc carlson rips it in his forward. but i still like its goofy charm.

Even though I ripped on the Superboy 147 replica edition on another thread--having got that Giant and these Legion archives made me want to read the Legion in chronological order (or re-read in most cases).

So I'm into volume 2 already, and I imagine I'll get through 3 by next weekend. So now I'm facing a problem. Do I hunt down v. 4, or let it slide? I may already have some of those stories in reprint form, and I'm antsy to zip through 5 and get to those favourite stories in 6. After that, I dunno. I do have back issues of most of the Action issues that featured the LSH back-up series, and I do have the Superboys after that, and I do have the tabloid reprint of the Mordru story--so whether I'll be tracking down volumes 7 and 8 (and 9?), I wouldn't venture to say.

I'll have to make up my own checklist for each of those volumes--taking into account reprintings (unless someone offers a link to a site for such a checklist--hint).

With the Dynamic Duo book, I'm now at 39 DCU Archives, 9 Spirts, 2 Tors, 1 Mad, 1 TA and 2 Masterworks (both of which may need to be replaced). I was in a different comic shop the other day and spotted "Justice League Archives, V5". I was all ready to fork over the cash when to my surprise, I had only $20. Another day, then.

Geez, maybe I should get lost! I only got 22 archives, with, I'd guess, a similar Masterworks total...

Keep in mind I don't care for that Golden Age stuff too much, although I do have Batman 1/2 and Superman 1...

'course, I've filled my adjacent bookcase with 60+ civil war histories in the last three years! Rebel yell, y'all...YEEEEHAAAAAAAA!

Best...

I believe I'm only one up on the last count I posted. I didn't buy THUNDER agents or Aquaman. But I did buy Dynamic Duo.

And I'm stalled in my re-reading of LSH. I felt I couldn't proceed without getting vol. 4--or else Best of DC Digest 64 which reprints most of the stories I would be missing (I have BoDCD 68)--but no luck finding either so far.

A mere 19, including the Spirit. It would be twenty, but the Dynamic Duo Archives hasn't surfaced this side of the pond yet.

I'm up to 38 volumes right now. Aquaman 1, Batman 1-5, Dark Knight 1-3, Dynamic Duo 1, SA Flash 1-3, SA Green Lantern 1-4, Hawkman 1, Justice League Of America 1-7, Legion of Super-Heroes 1-10, Thunder Agents 1, and World's Finest 1-2.

Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to read Aquaman 1, Dynamic Duo 1, SA Green Lantern 4, or Thunder Agents 1 yet. Too many books in my "to read" pile.

Also, in all honesty, I won't be buying any more Legion books. I plan on purchasing future volumes of all the other series that I have.

I have Aquaman 1, Atom 1, Batman 1, Dynamic Duo 1, Doom Patrol 1, SA Flash 1-3, SA Green Lantern 1-4, Hawkman 1, JLA 1-7, LSH 1-4 and 7-11, and Supergirl 1. That's 30.

If I can add in the GL/GA slipcase, the Deadman slipcase and the Crisis slipcase, that gives me three more 'collections'.

Once I pick up the Dynamic Duo volume, I'll have 61, so 60 for now. Whew, that is a lot of dough! I like to call my comic/action figure room, the Fortress of Solitude...
Boy, am I ever a huge nerd!
